Living off-campus and tuition cost

Hey guys, I was wondering if anyone on here is living off-campus? I'll be incoming transfer student and I'll be commuting to SC. On my FA package, it said the estimated TOTAL cost of attendance is $60,034 for the academic year...this includes the rooming+boarding as well, right? So, since rooming+boarding doesn't apply to me, the actual bill will only include the tuition? Does anyone know how much the tuition alone costs (estimate) for Fall 2012? I'm kind of paranoid when it comes to bills and expenses! At first, I was like, "Oh, my gosh. $60,034 is just too much for me too afford even with the generous FA package," but I realized it's just an estimate of literally everything. If the actual tuition is closer to 42-44K, my grants will nearly cover it all, so it makes me feel a lot better...

I just get really freaked out when I see large numbers! Anyway, back to my original question: anyone living off-campus? How's it like? Did you regret not living in a dorm? I wanted to dorm, but off-campus is a much cheaper route for me.

I found the estimated Cost of Attendance for 2012-2013 online.
You will be billed for the tuition and fees. Grants, scholarships, and loans will be applied and then you pay or are refunded any difference. The other costs can be a bit flexible depending on the spending choices you make.

42,722 tuition
741 mandatory fees
12,440 room & board
1,500 books and supplies
900 personal
580 transportation

59,883 TOTAL

and you add 150 for orientation your first semester

I’m about to be a 3rd year and I’ve lived off campus the past year (sophomore year) and am going to live off campus for the upcoming year and beyond haha.

Your account is only billed with the tuition and fees. I’m in the same boat as you where my financial aid (grants, etc.) cover almost up to the 42000 area. Based on my calculations of tuition and estimated fees it looks like 44000-45000 should be what you have to pay to USC. The rest of cost of attendance is up to you.

I dormed my first year at New North and that was a lot of fun with the whole freshman experience and everything. Most transfers live off-campus though and off campus life is a lot of fun too. It’s far cheaper for me to live off campus so that’s the biggest benefit haha. Just involve yourself with student orgs and you won’t miss too much of the social life of USC even if you are off campus :). Also, biking to campus from way out there is good exercise for me haha.

If you are covered by parents’ medical insurance, make sure you file for waiver; otherwise you will be automatically charged $518 (I think) per semester to cover mandated medical insurance. You have to refile waiver each semester. There will still be a $235 (approx) charge for the clinic which is mandatory regardless. Just a thought to save some $$$.

It has been my impression and I could be wrong so definitely check this out, but if USC gave you grants based on COA of $60,000 and your COA is not $60,000 because you will be living off campus, wouldn’t your grants be reduced? I would call FA tomorrow to get the answer.
