Living Off Campus as a Freshman

Well, I’ve just recieved the Outreach Scholarship of 2000/year, and if their purpose was to draw in OOS students, it defintely worked. I’m just about to accept their admissions offer, however I have a couple more questions…

Can an out-of-state student live off campus with a parent? After searching, I haven’t found a definitive answer (especially for an out-of-state student and parent).

Is a meal plan still required if I’m not living in the dorms?

And finally, does that mean that is the only scholarship awarded to me, being the only award on the financial aid tab at my calpoly portal?

Thanks guys!

Well I don’t know why you’d want to live with your parent at college unless you had a good reason to…but yes, you can live off campus, and no, you do not need a meal plan if you live off campus

Thanks for the quick reply! Haha and yeah… I know, it’s not the ideal situation. However, I don’t have the money to live in dorms. My dad and I will be moving in with my grandparents until he can find a job and afford an apartment and until I find a job and can afford to stay in the dorms hopefully during my sophomore year.

Do you, or anybody reading, know anyone who has stayed off campus freshman year and then lived in the dorms for their sophomore year?

My son lived off campus during freshman year and still does because of medical problems. Thus I can confirm that you can live off campus as a freshman, and that my son did not have to sign up for a meal plan. I cannot answer whether you can go to the dorms after a year of living off campus, but I do not see why not. I would not feel bad about living with a parent. My son has met plenty of students who need to live at home in order to afford Cal Poly. Good luck.

My spent my freshmen year in dorms, and after that I never wanted to live on campus again. I had a on campus job, dorm friends, blah blah. It definitely wasn’t for me. So I decided to be a commuter student. Works pretty well for me since I have a tons of friends still that I knew from high school.

You can definitely live on campus your sophomore year even if you didn’t your freshman year. Also, you should look into being a CA/RA your sophomore year. Even if you’re living off campus, you can still apply to be one, and if you get hired, you get free housing and either a free meal plan or plus dollars. So if money’s tight and it sounds like a position you’d be interested in , I’d suggest it.
