Living off campus as a freshman?

Unfortunately, since I sent in my enrollment deposit late (by about a week), it looks very unlikely I will be getting housing on campus. For such a big school, I was kinda hoping to get some kind of on campus housing so I could get to know some people and such but..

being completely honest, even if I join clubs and get involved like they tell you too, will I still be disconnected and not as involved as the freshman who live on campus? I'm really nervous I'm going to end up like an anti-social hobit or something...I'm planning to live in off campus housing 3 blocks from the U but I'm still freaking out...

I wouldn’t worry that much. there will be other students who live off campus and you’ll be meeting new people left and right…in classes, after classes, in clubs, etc. and if you can’t live on campus this year, there’s always next year!

As I’ve always said, I wouldn’t attend a university where I couldn’t live on campus. Also as the post above mention, there is always a next year… or maybe even stay on their housing waiting list, maybe next semester or sometime within the school year.

I think it also depends heavily on how close to campus you live. And where you live. There are apartment complexes very close to campus where the atmosphere is basically the same as you’d find in a dorm. All the residents are students and the rooms are dorm-style and everything. There would be plenty of opportunities to meet people in a place like that.

I have three friends who live/lived at home and went to the U…and none of them made ANY friends. But then again, none of them joined any clubs; they would just go to class and then go back home. If you make the effort to join organizations and really get yourself involved, I’m sure you’ll be able to meet people.

And like other people said, there’s always next year. My brother lived at home first semester and haaaaated it, then lived in Bailey Hall second semester and met SO many people. I’m sure everything will work out in the long run. :)
