I am thinking about moving out of campus and renting an apartment with friends. I am wondering if utilities are included in the monthly rent? Things such as cable, water, gas, and electricity? Does someone know?

It depends on the apartment. In most cases, water and electricity are not included.

^yup, in most cases it’s seperate. in cases where it is included, you usually end up paying higher rent. Split between a few people it isn’t much. I think between me and my ex roommates, it was never more than like $25/mo

MY 3 friends and I are looking for a 2bed/2ba apartment and these cost between $2750-3000 a month in Westwood. Divided into 4, that comes to $750 a month. I figure cable, internet, water, and electricity cost around $50 per person, so the total monthly cost should be around $800. That is way better than staying at the residential halls/plazas.
I am also thinking about university apartments and what I like about them is they come furnished. Does anyone know how these compare to non university apartments? What are the pros and cons for each?
Hey thanks for everybody’s input! I appreciate it!

The only real downside to University apartments is that you have to follow their housing rules.

Haha… that is exactly why my friends don’t like them and that is also why my parents prefer them over the off campus apartments. They also worry that one or more of my roommates can’t pay their share of rent and that would mess everybody up.

You can find a furnished apartment (my current apartment in westwood is furnished.) Not sure if you or your friends would be interested, but if you had a car, you could probably live relatively close to westwood and pay probably half the rent (in my last apartment which was a 20min busride and a 10min drive to westwood, the total rent for our 2be2ba was $450 per person, utils included.) in fact, many people in my building were UCLA students as well (i found at least 3 other people in my building)

if you had a car, and could secure a parking permit, this wouldn’t be an issue for you and your friends. I pay the same rent i do now in westwood as i did in west la, but my apartment is like at least 2-3 times smaller than my old one. Although i don’t have a license so it’s easier for me to live in westwood than to live in west l.a.

if you’re responsible enough you can totally do it, and save a ton of money doing it.

Beyphy, my friends drive but I am still working on my license. I know it is my fault! So I need to live in Westwood and in close proximity to the campus. Which apartment complex are you at, so I can make some inquiries?

There are some apartments where you pay rent per bed. So, you don’t need to worry about splitting rent with friends, someone unable to pay their rent, or finding roommates.
