Living off Campus?!

Hello,
Hopefully I will get accepted to NYU and if I do I am looking at renting an apartment by NYU instead of living on campus. I love how at NYU you can live off campus and still really be apart of the school. I was wondering what areas should I focus on around the campus for a rental(specific streets and buildings)? I really like the West Village and pretty much anything immediately around Union Square. I want to be able to live off campus but still be apart of the culture. How much would I expect(okay, my dad) to pay for a good apartment? My sister lives in Chelsea and we were looking into getting an apartment together so if we go this route I would need two bedrooms. All my moms family lives in NYC so I know apartments are expensive.
Thanks!

Hey Fairfield County! If you look at the dorm locations of NYU, you will see that they vary anywhere from Chinatown (Lafayette) to Gramercy, so do your research! West Village, East Village, Chelsea could work, SoHo and so on are all great, but I know people who even don’t mind commuting from their homes in Brooklyn, so it is really up to you. For a good idea on pricing, check out Craigslist (I know it sounds sketchy, but it’s good research for listings at least. I got an amazing fashion internship in SoHo from Craigslist so it’s really not that bad!). Also, NYU has a service that will help you find off-campus housing.
If your mom’s family lives in NYC, they should be able to help you with further questions.
I hope I helped!

When you’re comparing costs of apartments, keep in mind what a dorm costs. D was in a low-cost triple freshman year - no kitchen or a/c. Cost came out to about $850/month. She did a low-cost double sophomore year - w/kitchen and a/c, came out to maybe $1400/month. Of course, these come “furnished,” include utilities, and are a “doorman building.” And they were very close to WA Square.
And, like Demi said, NYU has an off-campus housing site that’s worth checking. It helps that you have family in the area.

Hi I am looking to transfer, and live off campus. Do you know if any student can use the purple shuttle trolleys, or are they restricted to dorm residents?

kayf,

I believe that shuttle bus should be for any NYU student with a NYU ID card (should they ask for identification). There are school buildings that are spread out, e.g., East Asian Studies and maybe some students have to go to the medical/dental complex of NYU for whatever reason and the shuttle bus can get the student to these various locations even if they are not coming directly from a dorm.

So, as long as you are paying tuition and related fees, it seems to me you should be able to use the transportation service, as well as other services, like the Paladium gym, Cole Sports Complex, etc.

If you’re looking for apartments in the Chelsea area (or most of Manhattan for that matter), I would recommend looking for a 1 bedroom that could be flexed into a 2 bedroom. Because true two bedrooms in manhattan (more expensive in the Chelsea/Greenwhich area than anywhere where) usually start at around $3,200 (in the financial district) and run well into the $5,000 range. Whereas large lofts (800 sq ft+) can be flexed into two bedrooms and usually start at around $2500 and one bedrooms usually start around $2700. (At least in the Financial district/some places near NYU) Chelsea one bedrooms typically start at $3200+.

Yes, if you are an NYU student with student ID, you can use the NYU shuttle trolleys/buses.
