hi there- I am the mother of a son attending Elon in the fall . We are very excited! I am helping him decide on housing, and was wondering if anyone knew much about LLC’s? He is considering the Business one,as well as a new Sports one. But then maybe it would be fun meeting kids from all majors… Any thoughts or experiences? Can you join one sophomore year, or not rejoin after freshman year?
I am curious about them too. My son isn’t 100% certain of his major, so he decided to just request regular housing with a random roommate. He choose historic hall style because he heard they are very social there ad everyone just leaves their doors open, so you meet lots of people. I think the LLCs sound great, but I think since my son isn’t sure about his major, it would benefit him to live with a mix of people…
Welcome to the Elon family! My son is currently a junior, and although he didn’t live in a LLC, he was an RA and is familiar with many of the housing options. Whether or not your student would enjoy an LLC depends a lot on what he or she is looking for. The LLCs are great options for meeting students with shared interests, meeting students in other classes (most are freshmen and sophomores), and having scheduled opportunities for socialization. They are also useful for helping a student get into a dorm that may be desirable. For example, if Colonnades or Global Village is a first-choice location, applying for an LLC located there could get you there. And, yes, students can apply for an LLC in sophomore year, or choose to live elsewhere for sophomore year after living in an LLC freshman year. If, however, your student would prefer a more traditional freshman dorm experience that would be more social and based on the “shared freshman experience” then considering a dorm in the Historic Neighborhood or Global Village might be the way to go. There are also LLCs located in Historic and Global Village dorms, which might give a student a little of the “best of both” worlds. One note of caution about the new Sports LLC. I believe it is located in Smith Hall. Hopefully having the LLC there will up Smith’s game a little. But traditionally Smith, as the only all-boys dorm on campus, has rocked a kind of “Animal House” atmosphere. Some boys enjoy that, others don’t. So, just know that’s a possibility when choosing that LLC. My son lived in Sloan freshman year, and says that if he was choosing again he would still pick Sloan (or another Historic dorm) as a first choice and Global Village as a second choice. Colonnades is less social, and Danieley is just too far. Good luck! I hope your boys enjoy Elon as much as my son does.
Thankyou so much @cocosmyfavorite . That was really insightful .
By Animal House ( yes, I saw the movie) , did you mean its party/beer 24/7, or more that it is a pig-sty, or both? lol
Yeah, kinda both. Also, there’s been some pride associated with the amount of building damage the boys can cause, everything from broken window screens and light fixtures to doors pulled from bathroom stalls and drinking fountains ripped from walls. Some is purely accidental, a football being tossed in the hallway goes through the window screen, but much is the result of alcohol-induced poor judgement.
My son is coming from an all boys high school , so that frat type behavior wouldn’t bother him. That said, he isn’t really a partier so I think co-ed might be nicer
