Since the LMU website does not show the dorm rooms i would like to hear from those who have visted or currently attend? How are the dorm rooms?

Freshman dorms are all communal bathrooms (this year some were put into McKay, a suite style arrangement, because they enrolled 1350 students instead of 1250). The best dorm is Del Rey North followed by Del Rey South. They are the newest, but DRN is better because some rooms have an awesome view of LA. Rosecrans is the dorm with all the people who party all the time and the dorm itself is horrible. Whelan is also old and that has all the people who try to get high all the time. Desmond is all girls, but they have the largest rooms out of them all. In the east quad, there is huesman, doheny, and sullivan. The east quad is away from most of the freshmen (I only know a few people who live there). Huesman and sullivan are secluded being only one sex and I have heard the rooms aren’t that great. Doheny isn’t bad because it has sinks in the rooms, but it is sex by floor (not by wing like in DRN and DRS).

I would rank them the following…
- Del Rey North
- Del Rey South
- Desmond (if you are a girl)
- Doheny
- Whelan
- Rosecrans (higher if you like to be up all night)
- Huesman and Sullivan

I live in Del Rey North on the top floor (4th) and I have a room with an awesome view. I would highly suggest DRN or DRS if you want a balance between studying and social activities.

If you have any other questions feel free to ask, especially if you want to know about DRN.

thanks so much that was really helpful!

Hi,

I don’t know if all that is going to be accurate next year. The Del Rey’s are for sure tops, and yes, if you are a girl Desmond and then Doheny, but next year Rosecrans will become 2 floors female and only one floor men, so word is Whelan is the place to go if you want to be up all night lol. For years Whelan and Rosecrans were two floors male, one floor female, but next year with Rosecrans changing to two floors female and one male, people are saying Whelan will be the party dorm.

That said, if you get Del Rey- lucky!

Heyy, does anyone know how housing selection works? I was just wondering if it is first come first serve / also if housing requests start after the whole class of 2014 commits (May 1), or do you get to fill out housing when you get admitted.

For my class (current freshman) housing packets were sent out according to commitment date (the earlier you commit, the earlier they send you your housing packet in the mail). It could be different next year, but if it is the same method, do your packet the day you get it in order to ensure good housing. Your room assignment will come out in mid-july (once again assuming they have the same method). Hope this helps.

thanks… does anyone know when LMU sends out their admission decisions?

southpawsd - That was really helpful, thank you! I’ve thinking about which dorm I want to live in and I liked Desmond and Doheny, but for some reason i overlooked the Del Rays. I’m definitely checking them out now!

Sorry, given the change ups for next year I should have included a ranking.

Del Rey North or South

Desmond

Doheny

Rosecrans (now two floors female one floor male.)

Huesman and Sullivan

Whelan

Benefits of each:
DRN and DRS- newer, some rooms with great views, random themes or communities in each
DES- all female- cool tradition
Doheny- nice building and good location- super close to cafeteria
ROS- going two floors female it’s gonna be like Desmond- fun without drama.
Hues and Sul- if all male or all female is your thing, it can be fun. Smaller buildings too so easier to know most people in it.
Whelan- tradition like Rosecrans but again, I suspect it will become the loud dorm next year.

Also worth noting size: Des, Ros, Whe, Sul, and Hues have rooms that are all 12x16. Doheny has the smallest rooms and DRN and DRS are slightly smaller than the ones mentioned.

Good luck to everyone waiting to hear back!

bump! any new information for incoming freshman fall 2011?

bookmarked

I’m writing to defend Sullivan Dorm which seems to be at the lower end of the lists here. My daughter, a current Freshman, was very bummed when she was assigned Sullivan, however, very soon after moving in she decided she loved it. It has a beautiful courtyard area, the rooms are among the largest and it is a one story building so all the rooms have very high ceilings (at least 15’) which make the rooms feel even bigger and no elevator or stairs to slow you down. Not only that, as I have posted here before, LMU is a very “study” school and you need quiet time to study. As my daughter said, “you can go to the louder dorms to party but it is hard to study there”.
Good luck to all of you going.

Does anyone know if Rosecrans is going to be 2 floors female and 1 floor male again next year? And since this was Rosecrans first year not having 2 floors male did the “party” dorm where the kids are up all night switch from Rosecrans to Whelan as predicted?

Does anyone know how many choices you get to list on the housing app?

Last question, what is Huesman really like?

Son is looking for a balance between studying and social activities.

“Does anyone know how many choices you get to list on the housing app”

Six, and the app is online.

Thanks for the info. LMU told my son since he just paid his commitment deposit this week it would take a few days before the “MY LMU” system would let him in to the drop down menu for “student housing on line services”. He was able to pay his $400 deposit because that is a different system.

If anyone knows the answer to my Rosecrans, Huesman, and Whelan questions please let me know.

Does anyone know why the only option when my son goes to do the on line housing application on his mylmu (which was an error message until yesterday waiting for all his deposits to be processed) is for summer even though the page says it is for new freshman fall housing and the directions specifically say to select “2011-2012 academic year” option? Did anyone else have this problem?

that didn’t happen online for us at all. it went right to fall 2011. I’d call housing tomorrow and ask them. they were really helpful when I called with questions. Is your son going to the orientation in June? I’m not sure if we registered for that correctly. The link they leave in my LMU doesn’t connect to anything.

We couldn’t figure out the orientation registration either.

Thanks for your reply takes2muchtime,
How long ago did you submit the housing app? My son was hoping to take care of it today but yes I will call housing first thing in the morning. His last day of school/graduation is June 21st so we most likely will be attending the only orientation offered after that which is June 23rd? Which date are you and your daughter attending?
