LMU merit scholarships

Has anyone who was accepted EA to the LMU film school received an indication that LMU is offering a merit scholarship? My daughter was accepted to a number of schools and the others included merit scholarship information with the acceptance letter. Should I assume she is not being awarded a merit scholarship?

There are a few posts in the LMU threads that talk about timing of scholarships/financial aid offers. It appears from the LMU website for future Lions that you’ll hear something in early February, but I’m just going off my memory from what the post said. Sorry I don’t know how to link you directly to that thread!

BTW…my son was accepted EA to the film school for Animation. He received a sizable merit award with the acceptance letter he received from another university’s Game Design program (they sent it within a week of him applying), so we have come to realize that each school does it their own way  Congrats to your daughter – what is her intended major?

She was accepted for film production. Thank you so much for your response. I am quite relieved to know she may still find out there will be assistance!

Yes, that’s correct @njsmommy. EA financial aide/scholarship info comes out in February. Wish it were sooner! LMU is DDs top choice, so we are keeping fingers crossed she receives some sort of scholarship.

@njsmommy To your point, the schools like LMU that do not send the financial award info with the letter of acceptance are at risk of losing the interest of the kid’s and parent’s. With an offer in hand from a competing school that a family knows they can afford, the child becomes emotionally invested in that other school. Plans get made, good news gets shared, etc. So by the time LMU’s financial offer comes in February in some cases the student and their family may no longer even care. Just my opinion.

Reassuring but frustrating. I got in EA, but was also accepted EA to 4 other schools, and all shared what I would get in merit with my acceptance letter. LMU was the only one that didn’t let me know what my merit scholarship would be, and it is critical to my continued interest.

I agree @EDHDAD that it can be challenging to make final decisions when schools release critical information (acceptances, scholarships, etc.), all on different dates! My S is holding out on his final decision until the end of March if he’s been accepted to USC’s game design program. I’ve talked with him about the funds we have saved to help him with his college journey; he knows if he takes the Bradley offer, he could graduate debt-free (which as an adult, is hugely appealing to me). Unless LMU offers a good enough package, he will need to take out some loans (and work in college and save his summer job $$) to make that school work (and similar situation with USC). We’ve also talked about how living debt-free may enable him to live where he wants after college graduation, versus being in debt may require him to come live at home, save $$ and then make his way into the world. The best we can do (in my opinion), is openly explore the pros and cons, and keep our fingers crossed (behind our backs, of course) that he makes choices that will be helpful as he transitions into adulthood. Good luck to your family on this wild ride!

@njsmommy It’s been weird for me having to discuss our financials with our children as it relates to our ability to help with college. I have three kids in HS right now and I don’t want to have any unnecessary debt for them or us. So this whole thing has turned into a chess match in terms of not only trying to figure out what is best for our older son, but what the likely paths of our other two look like and what the cash flow outlays look like for the next seven or so years.

Agreed, it feels odd at first, especially we tend to keep our finance info private and we’ve emphasized to him this is nothing to share with anyone else. But, looking back, I do remember my parents having this kind of conversation with me with I was a senior in high school. Our next one is just freshman, but I think it’s been helpful for her to hear some of these conversations as well, as it sows the thought of “hmm, I better make sure I’m saving more for college” in her head

@njsmommy Unfortunately the kids do talk to each other at school about things like their merit awards, their family income, etc. I told my son to knock it off because the only thing it can result in would be either himself or one of his friends feeling badly.

Newer CC user here. I take it from this thread that those who were accepted EA are only informed in early Feb (i.e. about now) on any merit scholarships. Does that mean that those who are accepted RD (daughter was just accepted on Feb 2) won’t hear on any merit scholarship offered, if any, until what…maybe early March?
