LMU v. Santa Clara

Any thoughts anyone?

I’ll reply here just because you haven’t gotten any hits yet. I personally believe that SCU is a better University (I have visited both). That being said, FA and your intended major witll also play a factor in that as well.

Son is leaning toward LMU as of this am. He knows engineering is better st SCU, but he likes the location and clubs of LMU. And we (parents) like the diversity.

SCU grad here. Daughter chose LMU. Both are solid schools, but she felt LMU was a better fit for her.
I must admit I was very impressed overall by LMU at their preview day.
i also liked the diversity.

I too am an SCU grad and my twins were on the fence about SCU vs. LMU. SCU is on the quarter system which is pretty fast paced so you might want to keep that in mind. One twin LOVED LMU, but unfortunately was waitlisted and decided to take her name off the list. After another visit to SCU, they ended up deciding on Gonzaga and Syracuse University. They are going their separate ways!

Just got back from visiting both. Granted it was Easter weekend, which was not great, but it was the only time I could go. Went Friday to LMU. It was a ghost town. Nicely maintained campus, but obviously everybody lives close enough to go home for a long weekend. SCU on Saturday, busy, bustling. I have heard that it is a more “typical” college experience, so I’ve made my choice. SCU was beautiful, the kids were great, and it has a better rep outside of California. Thanks for all the feedback.

Just so you know, SCU had Friday off (Good Friday), and LMU was off Wed, Thurs and Fri. So it was more of a break for them than a “long weekend.”

My decision in choosing Santa Clara over LMU was a result of the culture. My top two schools were Notre Dame and Boston College. I was waitlisted at Notre Dame and still hope for an acceptance. I was accepted at Boston College, but the financial aid is terrible and it was simply not feasible. After those two came Santa Clara and LMU. I felt at ND and BC this culture of pride the students had. They loved their school, were extremely proud of it, and did everything they could to make it a vibrant, dynamic community. This was something I also found at Santa Clara, though less so at LMU. LMU tries to base its merits too much on the southern California weather, beach proximity, Los Angeles, etc. As my tour guide at Notre Dame said, “You can live in a city at any time in your life, but only once can you go to college.” Santa Clara is about the college. They will tell you about the nice California weather (though being from Northern California, the comparison to LA or San Diego is moot point) and the Silicon Valley advantages. However, they aren’t right by the beach. There are no movie stars. The concentration of blondes in bikinis is not in their favor. So, Santa Clara has the better school (slightly) and the better community. It was not a hard choice for me and I’m glad you made the same decision.

Son has chosen SCU over LMU as well as USC and Cal Poly SLO - all good choices. He likes the size of SCU and the location. I couldn’t be prouder of him.
