I need help choosing to apply between LMU and Santa Clara University. I will have a car at LMU but not at Santa Clara (so going to stanford for volunteering and research will be a bit difficult).

I like both campuses. I will be majoring in Biology.

From my analysis, I believe that LMU offers more courses in the Sciences. But, I dont know if it has as strong a reputation at SCU.

Which school will better help me prepare for medical school?
Which school has better access to research?

Please help!!!
Anything is appreciated.

both are excellent schools, and you need to meet with professors and students in the specific department at each of the schools to get a feel for what they can offer.

I don’t really know, but I severly doubt that a school (ie Stanford) would offer any research opportunities to a student from another university.

just an fyi - when we took the campus tour last spring at LMU, our tour guide was a psych major, pre-med. She turned down Berkeley and UCLA (from out of state) to go to LMU because she felt that there were MORE research opportunities, more professor interaction at the smaller schools. She has a pre-med advisor, a psych advisor and an honors advisor (yes 3 of them!) that she gets invaluable advice from, so important when choosing the right classes for pre-med. (you might be able to look her up on the admissions web site, under campus tour guides, and maybe you can contact her with your questions, she was from Montana) I think this is the type of “personal attention” you get from a smaller school like LMU or Santa Clara.

I do not know about sciences and biology, but my opinion is that Santa Clara is a notch above LMU academically. SCU is known for business and engineering. But, it is the “whole package” that a school offers you as an individual that matters - not prestige. Look at both schools closely - they are both excellent.

Full disclosure - I live near SCU and my younger daughter just started at LMU as a Frosh Business major.
