LMU vs. Syracuse Finacial Aid

Friend admitted to LMU recording arts and also Syracuse Newhouse for Communications. Prefers LMU for the program but Syracuse about $8000 better/year, virtually a free ride. Thoughts for a low income first generation Hispanic? Anyone had success getting LMU to improve or match an offer?

My daughter was accepted to 5 colleges, LMU being one of them, and in all honestly, LMU’s financial aid package was a joke. Especially considering she’d be traveling 3000 miles to go to the school. I was initially told that unless there was a “change in the family’s financial situation” that the aid amount could not be improved.

FYI - My FAFSA calculated we can afford about $17K a year for my daughter’s college. With LMU’s “financial aid package” we’d have to pay over $43K per year!

But - they did send me a letter telling me I qualified for $40K loan (i.e. - $160K debt over 4 years) - so we have that going for us! :-)!

She will mostly likely not be attending LMU

Low income first generation Hispanic should go after money. He/she is not getting a profession that is “high income for sure”, as a matter of fact he/she is getting pretty much into “my own little business” profession. It is better to take a safer financial path.
