I'm looking for a CA safety school to replace California Lutheran University. I am a poli sci major. I am a transfer. I was just curious as to which school has the best reputation for giving a good amount of financial aid. I'm definitely not looking for a (almost impossible for a transfer) full ride but just something that would make the price reasonable. I also have outside scholarships to help.

Both Whittier and Chapman are fairly generous with merit aid, in the $12-17,000 range for incoming freshmen based on grades and test scores. Chapman awards merit scholarships to transfers, and it seems like Whittier does too although your best bet would be to call their financial aid office and ask. Outside scholarships will reduce need-based aid at both schools.

At one point someone here posted that Chapman is the ONLY school that meets full need of all accepted students but is FAFSA only. They DO package loans in their financial aid awards.

I agree they are generous with merit aid for high achievers. We loved the school when we visited with DD…she didn’t like it as much as we did. I think it’s an oustanding place for someone majoring in the arts or humanities. Our kid is an engineer…Chapman’s sciences were not strong…four years ago.

@vballmom thank you so much! i was first looking at clu and they had scholarships for transfers listed which really helped but i noticed that most schools don’t do that. lol. Thanks so much for your help! Outside scholarships really do help, my parents are extremely happy I have a few.

@thumper thanks so much for your help! i visited over this summer and thought that it was gorgeous! And does seem very liberal artsy. Thanks very much.

You should check their policies on awarding aid to transfer students. Some schools award the best aid to incoming freshmen and transfers get very limited (if any) aid. Please check…I have no idea what their financial aid policy is for awarding aid to transfer students.

Are your scholarships for all of your transferred years or for just one year?

It’s hard to get much need-based aid as a transfer student.

Does Chapman meet need for transfers?

@mom2collegekids my scholarships are for all of my transferred years. I believe that they do.

My nephew did polisci at Chapman and loved it, had great merit aid, too

that’s so great to hear! i definitely think that i would be very happy at Chapman.
