LMU's med school acceptance rate is reported to be very high. Does anyone have any first-hand experience with their health pre-professional program, which on paper, appears to very impressive? They really seem to cater to the students. Son is trying to decide between UCB, UCLA, USC, or LMU.

What is their med school acceptance rate?

Med school acceptance rates need to be viewed within context. A school can have a 80%+ acceptance rate but that does NOT mean that 80% of students who begin as pre-med students get accepted.

Often it goes something like this…

School A says it has an 85% acceptance rate. It has X freshmen saying that they are pre-med. By the end of frosh year, 30% or so have changed their majors. Then, by the end of soph year (and OChem), another 40% or so have changed their majors. Then, by the time med school application-time rolls around, some more have changed their minds. So, of the original X number of freshmen saying that they’re pre-med, probably 75% never apply for med school.

So, of those remaining 25% or so (these are often the kids with the best GPA/MCATS), about 85% get accepted to at least one MD American med school.

Therefore, just looking at med school acceptance rate by itself, won’t really tell you the whole story.

That said, LMU is a Jesuit school and those are usually strong in the arts and sciences.
