LOA and MOCs

Does the Academy notify the MOCs that I recieved an LOA or should I fax it to them? or does an LOA not factor when it comes to nominations?

I sent a letter to my MOC's notifying them and sent them a copy of the LOA. I will also bring copies of it to the interviews. I think all the Academies do notify them, but it doesn't hurt. It's also a good idea to bring copies to the interview because I've heard some MOC's don't let their interview boards know about it so that it doesn't influence a decision..

LOA's will usually play a part in your nomination. Your MOC should know that you have one, but you shouldn't be concerned about letting them know in a humble unassuming way. Some will say they have had interviews declined becuase they had a letter, others will tell you it clinched the deal. Ask the MOC's office to be sure.

The Academy notifies MOC's a few days before they send you the LOA so that the MOC can tell you, if desired. Not all MOC's tell you - some let you get it in the mail. Many MOC's do not tell their nominating committee about LOA’s either. Every MOC has their own way of handling LOA's.

MOC's want as many kids from their district to go to the Academy as possible so why would they not interview you? They may not tell the committee about the LOA. However, your MOC has an incentive to nominate you; as long as you get a nom - you are going to the Academy (provided med passes etc). The good news for the MOC is LOA recipients are not charged against the MOC so the MOC will be able to send someone else too.

There is no benefit to a MOC in not giving a nom to an LOA recipient. The only time that would occur is if the MOC has either:
a) more LOA recipients for a given Academy than space on the slate or
b) you mess up very badly

Mom: can you post a link with this specific info? I would like to read more than what is available on the USAFA site or the (also very basic) info on the MOC link.

Thanks!

Ok thanks, I called just to make sure and they had all received notifications from the Academy about the LOA. But, just curious, how much weight is put on the interview part of the nomination? and also do any LOA recipients ever not receive nominations? It is nerve-racking to think that the whole appointment depends on this...

I cant answer the first part, but i can tell you that i'm sure there've been cases when people with LOAs didn't get nominations. I imagine because they probably butchered the interview terribly or the MOC decided that there was a better candidate to receive the nomination. However, since you have an LOA, i'm sure that that will help you out a deal. Cant speak for every MOC though, but thats my opinion

Do most MOCs conduct interviews? We are in Texas and we were told that there would be no interviews. Just curious.

here in MS we dont have them either....

If you are referring to Senator Cornyn, he does not do interviews at all. (if that's who you're referring to) make sure the essays he requires are really well thought out. I just about starting flying away on cloud 9 when I got his nomination almost 2 years ago! (Thanksgiving week in fact!).

Senator Hutchinson also does not do interviews. So, the only one that might is your local representative (and if they don't, then cool!).

Interviews: Some MOC's do them, some don't. Depends on the MOC's preference. Often senators don't interview or only interview by phone but reps do interview (a factor of the number of candidates, in our area the rep gets about 60-75 candidates and the senators get approximatly 2000).

About LOA's gettings noms: A nom is yours to lose. Show up and behave well with a decent amount of prep and you will probably gain the nom. Curse and/or behave disrespectfully.... and you'll possibly be wondering why you didn't end up at the Academy. The LOA carry's alot of weight - but so does the MOC. The SA cannot force a MOC to give a nomination.

Botton line: do your best in everything. Keep your grades up, keep your leadership up and practice before your interview.

My S has interview with Senator Specter in two weeks and then first week in Dec., will appear before a board put together by our MOC. S is nervous, but hoping for the nomination!
