OK. What are those fine Candidates holding a LOA bringing to the table to set them apart from other Candidates.

I can only speak for mine, and honestly we were a little surprised he got one. USMA LOA was tied to athletics, Navy one does not appear to be:
GPA: 3.67 Rank: 117/825 SAT: 1290
Eagle Scout, Captain of dive team, athletic letter 3 times, county all-academic team, member church youth group, German honor society, teachers like him and wrote nice things; he finished his applications fairly early.

My guess is a combination of high GPA, high SAT/ACT, solid ECs, solid athletics, completing the app a little early, and a lot of luck. Or that combination plus being a recruited athlete.

Don't worry about if your son or daughter does not receive an LOA. Most candidates that get appointments don't.

My stats :
SAT: 1250
Class rank: 3/140
3 Sport Varsity Letter Winner
Captain of XC, and volunteer work.

Good Luck to everyone waiting. Never be doubtful just work hard and prove how badly you want to attend USNA and it will happen.

okay... i HAVEN'T received an LOA from Navy and these are my stats:
SAT: 1350
ACT: 30
GPA: 3.8/4.0 (school doesn't weight or rank)
3 sports (3 letters in all sports).
XC running captain, XC skiing captain, Envirothon state champs (9th at the North American competition)
various awards: RIT computing medal, Bryn Mawr book award, MTU society of women engineers certificate of merit

Not sure there is a magic formula for LOA...?? Seems different in many/most cases. No LOA at this locale; SQ received mid-Nov.

Continue to hear they're reserved for blue chip athletes and over-the-top academics.

I'm w/ PaulRevere on this one...even though son's LOA to USNA does not mention athletics (USMA one does), the fact that he's in contact w/ the coach has to have played a role...after seeing the other stats, it just has to. Everyone at the MOC interview was an A student who was Eagle scout...maybe one day someone can figure this out, but then, what would the parents talk about in the forum?

I guess it isn't too shabby, but directly underneath StevetheBeav, my record doesn't look overly impressive, so maybe that's why I don't have the LOA and he does

^^^

With your academics (GPA, SAT, and APs) I'm surprised you haven't received an LOA. When did you complete your file?

Yeah I was kinda bummed...My file was officially completed on 30 September 2007. I have already been 'Triple-Qualified' and also have had a Presidential Nomination in my pocket...

I have completed all nomination procedures for all of my MOCs (extremely confident that I will at least receive a nomination from my Representative), and am in the running for a Vice Presidential nomination, too. I've also applied to NROTC to show USNA how badly I want to become a Naval Officer...

Just today I received an invitation for a Candidate Visit Weekend, which I will definitely be attending in the near future...and I also attended Summer Seminar a few months ago...I honestly cannot do anything else to show USNA how badly I want to become a Midshipman...

congrats on the LOA though that's really sweet!

Thanks!

The USNA admissions process works in mysterious ways.

Yesterday they sent me a flyer inviting me to attend a local seminar to learn about NASS and the Academy application process.

does summer seminar factor into the WCS? just wondering.
would the eval from your squad leader factor in?

^^^

Yes, a little bit, but it won't make or break your score.

wow...that was a quick series of responses...haha i guess everyone is on here now
