Sell the car. Maybe they'll continually buy you a new one if they care that much about their image. Honestly, i dont think having a kid not going to college helps their image any bit.

Sell the car and your things that you don’t need. Sell those good clothes and only leave a few for yourself, just enough to wear! Then, if they care about image, they will buy you new clothes and a new car. THEN, you can just sell those again! And tell your parents that you will keep selling all those things because you want to pay for college! And now you just made them pay for your college education in a way!

lol, i feel like im in the same boat

This thread is over 5 years old. A little late for advice for the OP.

I had parents who were well off, but refused to help pay for college as well. I didn’t get mad- I got a job. More than that, I waited until I turned 25 so I could get pell Grant on my own… Lots of people are doing it.

@ lelalellen There is no “legal” obligation for parents to pay for college. Their legal financial obligation is to provide their child food, clothing, and shelter until they are 18. When the kid turns 18, the parents legal responsibility is over. I do not see it as a parent’s job to pay for their child’s education. Those who do, great.

@ sybbie719 There is no moral obligation to pay for your child’s college.,

Unfortunately for many students, the government and the colleges see it as the parents’ job to pay for much of their kid’s college costs, which leads to the situation in the first place.

Thread started in 2004. Why was it revived? Really odd.
