Loans for off-campus housing?

Hi,

I'm currently a freshman at NYU, and am looking for off-campus housing for the next school year, which is considerably cheaper than the on-campus housing.

However, in order to not burden my family, I want to take a loan out to live off-campus, but NYU Housing has told me that they cannot do that since off-campus is a private contract. For example, Federal Perkins loan is given through the school, and that means that I must live on-campus in order for that loan to apply for off-campus housing.

Is there any well-known, low-interest, and trustworthy loans out there that will let me live off-campus?

Thanks a lot! :)

I don’t know what you are talking about. Some schools will insist you live on campus freshman year, and maybe latter years as well, and when they give out the fin aid package, those are the numbers that are used for need. You don’t live on campus, you are assumed to live at home and commuting which can cut your need down. I dont know if this is what NYU is saying to you if their policies are that you have to live on campus freshman year or at home as a commuter, and the funding is so given, yes, you go by their terms or lose some of the money That is not an unusual situation among colleges.

No you are not entitled to any money so you can get a place of your own. Your aid pretty much comes from the school and what you can get on your own. 18 year olds usually cannot get much credit on their own. Not much history, not much in the way of job earnings. So if you can get a loan, that’s all up to you. Most places are NOT going to lend you money for that. It’s not easy to get money for a place to live That’s why there are homeless folks out there.

You either work it out with NYU in terms fo the aid they gave to you, or you live on campus or you commute or find your own money. If you find a place that will lend you money for this purpose, please share it with all of us.

Can you give a summary of what your costs and financial aid package for this year are? You should be able to get a financial aid package that includes an allowance for off-campus housing instead of on-campus housing. You can have federal loans and live off campus – my son currently does.

A loan for off-campus housing? Yes, it’s called a mortgage.

Um…I don’t think the student is planning to BUY a place to,live!

You don’t think so? But I heard that real estate in NYC is so affordable!
