So I'm taking out about $28,000 in loans per year to attend NYU. I'm not an international student. Which is the best loan to get? The PLUS loan that they offered, a private loan company, or something else that anyone can suggest?

look into www.myrichuncle.com
i've heard good things about them

yea i've heard good things about them too, but one good thing about nyu is that they set you up with good deals. The Citiassist loan and the sallie mae loans actually have better rates than my rich uncle. Citiassist has slightly lower rates than sallie mae, but sallie mae is adjusted more frequently, so I would say find someone you know that knows a lot about this and ask them. All that I could figure out was that those two that are offered with special rates for nyu students are pretty much better than anything else out there. Also, the plus interest rate is around 6% just like the two other student ones are, but I heard that they are much more strict about on time payments with the parent loans plus students can pay off just the interest rates during school or put off all payment until 6 months after graduation and I dont think that the plus loan has that option for your parents to put off the loans.

micheeatsfish, what are your stats and family income?

i applied for sallie mae
almost in the same situation as you are micheeatsfish

Remember that PLUS can be very annoying for your parents. They have to pay a particular amount every month till its completely paid off or something. I just went for a chunky Sallie mae loan after Citiassist rejected my credit. Hopefully i'll get into med school and pay 'em off.... someday...

ok do u pay back the stafford loan.. NYU gets for you?
or do u only pay the private loan you take out from citi or sallie mae etc?

All loans must be paid back...that is why they are loans and not grants.

You pay back the stafford and perkins loan yourself, Plus is for your parents i believe. But on Stafford (subsidized) you dont have to pay interest until you are out of school.
