I am curious--those of you who have received an LOA and/or an appointment
already as of this date, what is your class load right now as a Senior in high school. Did every one of you take as many AP classes as you could, or college classes too? Did some of you not take all AP classes and this was sufficient?

She is also taking an AP Government class on personal study-meeting weekly with a sympatheic teacher and a group of like minded masochistic Honor Seniors in her circle of friends. So she'll plan on taking that test too in May.

To also answer the LOA question - Academics is also considered in your PSAT and SAT scores...and it seems to me that this is what has weighed in even more on LOA's.

PSAT was 2100
SAT was
720 Math 660 English 700 Writing

my school limits us to 3 APs each person, each year, even though we offer at least 21. this is because they're in such high demand, and i go to a very competitive school.

oh ,so total: 11....i wish it was 15 :( sigh....darn school & its rules not letting me take the classes i want b/c of my sched. >:O

I go to a small school (200 people in the high school, and 43 in my graduating class) so they don't offer any "AP" or "Honors" classes. We do have "weighted classes" that help with the GPA's, but this year I ran out of math classes so i'm taking College Calculas online through SMSU (now Missouri State). Other than that, i've taken all the upper level science classes (Chem, Physics, Biology) that my school offers, but i think it's probably more grades than course load that got me in to the NA (just got notified by my Rep's office that the NA had offered me an appt. this morning). There just aren't too many options here. (sigh) I hope i'm prepared for the academics. Is anyone else worried about the actual academic side of the academy?

dictatoranna did you receive an LOA??

Yeah, I received an LOA. I'm guessing I'm just below the average CCer. All my stats are below everyone else's in both academics and physical strength. I have no clue...

Maybe it's just because I take all the APs avaliable to me (we don't have many AP classes) and do decent. Maybe it's because I go to a small private school. Maybe it's leadership skills. Maybe it's just a well-roundedness of everything. I don't know. I'm a jack of all trades and a master of none.

Congrats on your LOA...I still have yet to go to board!!

AP Spanish

I passed the AP US History exam with a 4.

My son just got his first nomination today.! A letter came from one of our senators. He is triple q'd and has one nomination. Now I wonder how long it will take to get the appointment?
He has always taken all honors versions of classes, but did not take AP as a Junior. As a Senior he has AP Physics, AP Calculus, AP English and AP Chemistry (only other AP offered is AP Geography) and has maintained all A's except for a "B" in 8th grade Algebra when a bad substitute came in to teach for the rest of the year. Our school does not weight the classes.
He also played varsity football and had the usual extra-curriculars like National Honor Society, etc.
He is ranked currently 23 out of 300. 68% of the students go on to a 4-year school.

Just waiting now...

I don't think being female hurts either...:) My BGO told me at my interview that they're trying to increase females to 25% next year, so maybe that would explain why it sounds like a number of females are getting LOAs/Appointments already.

On my nomination forms in particular I tried to emphasize things that would be unique about me - in particular, a state-funded gifted camp that I attended summer after 10 grade. Only 330 kids in the state go and my rep's committee seemed particularly interested - a mom who sat on it said her son went and she informed the committee it was "very prestigious."

Writing a thoughtful - but not dry - essay/statement for my MOC interview seemed to be helpful as well. One of them actually told me at the end of the interview that he "enjoyed reading my personal statements," so unless he was saying that to everyone, they honestly do spend a lot of time looking at that.

Navy2be - it took about 2 weeks from the time that I heard about my first nomination for the actual acceptance to come, soabout 5 days? after it showed up on the CIS as having a nomination.

"...yes, i know that i'm slacking off my senior year when i shouldn't...."

haha you slacker...only 5 AP's? haha

lizgirl - PMed you!

Guarantee of admission received Dec. 14. I took hardest classes possible (5 APs this year- spanish, english, calc bc, physics, us history) and have all the usual leadership positions. Interesting to note- my 1st CFA I sent to Annapolis and West Point was deemed 'unsatisfactory' by Army but Navy accepted it, whereas I received a LOA contingent upon successfully completing my CFA from Army in mid-October before I'd even sent out my application (basically I got in with a 2 hr interview that was a 10 min questioning and a 110 min information session). Quite interesting.

Well, my dd took a slightly different route because she's homeschooled. From Hillsdale College she took an overseas Churchill and WWII class and one on the History and Architecture of Rome. She's also taken calculus, physics, chem, Spanish, Fiber Arts, Music Fundamentals, Intro to Music History, lifeguarding, WSI, Architectural Design, piano, orchestra, and cello from our local 4 year college, and Master Gardener from another college. She did varsity sports through our local high school. Our local high school offers almost no APs, anyway.
