@D’yer Maker: I like “Roads Less Traveled”, since I think the admins will put the “Prep School” descriptor before it for consistency in nomenclature.

BTW, I am assuming your connections within the Bunkel/CC complex will help make this Sub Forum a reality?!?

I have a hard time thinking of Milton or Madeira, etc. as “hidden gems.” Many of the schools people suggest aren’t hidden. They’re fine, strong schools, but they aren’t unknown to the cognoscenti.

How about, “Strong Schools?” Or, to steal shamelessly from a well-known college advice book, “Schools that Change Lives”?

We should try to include day schools as well.

I agree with Periwinkle that many of these schools are not ‘hidden’ in any way - just overlooked because people obsess with POMP, Prestige and Pedigree (quoting D’yer Maker.)

With all due respect, I disagree with “schools that change lives.”

IMO, unlike the current situation in higher education, I believe strongly that ALL of these secondary prep schools will indeed change lives. They all have dedicated faculty that have high expectations of the students and are involved in their daily lives in a way that (99% of) public schools cannot begin to replicate. They all focus on community - no matter the % of boarding and day - each school emphasizes living and learning together and respecting each individudal in the community. And they all - at least as far as I am aware - have our children’s interest and development at the heart of their institution… as opposed to research, publishing and other such grandiose ideals of many of our more sought after universities and colleges.

What (I believe) we hope to achieve by this new thread/sub forum is to provide the opportunity for more students to find a positive school fit - regardless of how well the name might be known.

I started to say we might possibly advance the popularity of boarding school to many who thought it out of their reach… but based upon this year’s admission stats I think someone has beat us to the punch… (maybe the PS funding cuts??)
