My older son applied for 2-3 national scholarships and one local one. He received the local one and one national one; however, both were through my husband's union, so they were still ones with a limited applicant pool. (He also had a National Merit award.)

My younger son has won two small local scholarships so far (academic all stars in our county) and has applied for two national ones--one is the union one and the other for children of people who served in the marine services, thus also a limited applicant pool. (We won't hear if he won until sometime in April.) He will also be applying for the local union scholarships. Although the local ones are small, they do add up and are definitely helpful.

We simply did not feel it was worth the time and effort to apply for a bunch of big scholarships, since the competition is so great and the odds so long.
