<p>i'm a junior in high school and i'm frantically searching for schools and preparing for sats and acts. i definately want a bfa program in mt and i seem to be coming across lots of really great schools, in places i wasn't expecting. i've heard that you should go to school in the area that you want to work, however i'm not finding programs that really jump out at me in places like nyc and chicago. any help would be greatly appriciated!</p>
<p>Dramaqueen, the obvious answer to your question about programs in NYC is Tisch and Steinhardt at NYU. Not sure why they didn't "jump out at you". :)

I don't really think it necessary to go to a school in the same city in which you plan to work. If that were the case, practically every MT student would go to school in NYC. There are several VERY reputable schools across the nation that have students working on Broadway, in National Tours, etc. Look in the playbill the next time you attend a show and you will see how diverse the training is. Do look at the Big List on the link that alwaysamom posted. It might also be helpful for you, when you have the time, to go back and read all the old posts...there is a tremendous amount of valuable information on all the "top" schools, so to speak. You also say you are sure that you want a BFA...there are also good BM programs in MT as well (NYU-Steinhardt, OCU, Michigan, to name just a few). Good luck in your pursuits! It will be a memorable journey for the next year or so!</p>

<p>Not to be a "nitpicker", but the Michigan MT program is a BFA. There is a BM offered at Michigan but it is in Vocal Performance (with a more classical orientation), not Musical Theater.</p>
<p>Sorry, theatermom, you're right. I stand corrected. My d has looked at/applied to so many schools, I get them mixed up! I guess I was thinking School of Music (which is the school at UMICH where the BFA MT is offered.)<br>
Miami, does, however, offer both a BM and BFA in MT as do several other programs.</p>

<p>You do not have to attend school in the area, (city) that you want to work. You should attend where the training is a good fit for you.</p>
