I'm thinking of applying to U Chicago, and I'm definetly going to visit soon, but does anyone know what kind of neighborhood the university is in? ie Is it safe, is near the slums etc??
Thanks alot

Near "slums": yes

Safe: as safe as an urban campus could be.

From Frommer's Portable Chicago:

"Hyde Park is like an independent village within the confines of Chicago, right off Lake Michigan and roughly a 30-minute train ride from the Loop. 57th street is the main drag [edit: 53rd and 55th are pretty big streets, too], and the University of Chicago-- with all its attendant shops and restaurants-- is the neighborhood's principal tenant. The most successfully racially integrated community in the city, Hyde Park is an oasis of furious intellectual activity and liberalism."
