How long would a person take to get to the city?

There are past threads that address this in detail, so you would be doing yourself a favor to do some digging. But in short, Wash U is in a suburban setting but it is right on the edge of the west side of St. Louis city. It is in an affluent section of “old money”, and very close to Forest Park, site of the 1904 World’s Fair and an excellent resource for the students. There is an area 5 minutes from Wash U called the Delmar Loop that has lots of off campus entertainment and other options. The main suburban business center, Clayton, adjoins Wash U, basically bordering it on 3 sides. To get to downtown St. Louis takes maybe 15 minutes. It is a great location.

This should help.

All Wash U students get free Metro passes, which are awesome… as fallenchemist said, about 15 minutes to downtown on the Metro (the arch, cardinals/rams/blues, good restaurants, boutique-style shopping, sculpture garden, lots of revitalization and loft developments). it also takes another 20 minutes in the opposite direction to the Airport. there are two Metro stops on campus. you also get free Metro Bus passes; the busses go to the malls (three nearby… one really high-end one, and two decent ones), the grocery store, and Target.

Forest Park and the Loop are the two main areas that kids go to on the weekends and nights, because they’re both within walking distance. the Central West End neighborhood is another popular option. During your Freshman and Sophomore years, I’d say that the vast majority of things you do for fun are on campus… there’s a lot happening on campus, because nearly every one lives on campus. A good amount of Juniors and Seniors still live on campus (or apartments that Wash U owns near campus), too. As you get older, doing things in St Louis becomes more common and less of a random Saturday night activity.
