Anybody order loft beds for their freshman dorm rooms? S stayed in Capstone during orientation (this will also be his dorm) and the rooms are really basic....any thoughts, maybe I chould check the archives. I'm sure this has probably, been discussed. Also did anybody use blinds or drapes that can be put up with tension rods, I know they don't want any nails etc. in the walls.

you'll get loft bed info in the mail shortly. We saw some Dads building them in Maxcy during move in.S's room was so small, their onlky option was to bunk the beds already in there...not even room for lofts!
The windows should have blinds already in place. We did see girls hang curtains on tension rods, and some of them just draped bunches of hanging "stuff" over the rods.I didnt really see any boys rooms with curtains!I dont think boys really care about this stuff!
S brough some posters and a big Irish flag with his family crest and last name on it to hang up.They also sell posters in the Russell House during the Freshman Days. There were lots of pirate decorations going up when I was there!!Old movie posters seemed to be popular too.
The girls were way more into decorating than the guys!

BB,
S is staying in Capstone, too, and is undecided about the loft bed. Did you get the flyer yet? I noticed that the lofts have to be taken down and turned in near the end of April, before school is out - before exams I think. I wonder what students do with the wooden bed frame that is already there. I hate to not order one and then son not have enough space for computer, books, etc. But then, when we visited Capstone, the guys in the room just had their beds set up on the highest notch and had plastic storage bins underneath.

EAdad's d and my d shared a room in Capstone last year. They did not loft their beds and I was actually impressed with the ampunt of space they had. They raised their beds to the highest level and stored a lot of items underneath. Then they stacked their dressers one on top of the other which cleared more floor space. The TV sat on top of the tall dresser set up. They had room for a mini-fridge and a storage cabinet under it, as well as a shelving unit shared by them under the window. The closets were also quite roomy- much larger than mine when I was in college!
They did put a valance above the window - although I am not sure of the method that they ended up using. We had purchased a magnetic rod but I don't remember if it worked or if Eadad had to use some of his magic 3m stickers to keep it up. He introduced us to the 3m products and they work great!

I asked S about the lofts..he said they did have to be taken down during finals time,at least in Maxcy. The regular bed frames are stored in the rooms so they get dissasembled and shoved under the whole set up. If you want to keep your loft for the following year you have to store it somehow,he said he remembers someone hauling it to a storage unit.Otherwise they get discarded, which seems a shame.
He was in some Capstone rooms to visit kids and he said they were pretty roomy w/o lofts (compared to his Maxcy room at least!)
its amazing what you can fit under the beds when they are in the highest position.

Used lofts were sold in the parking lot of Bates House on move in day last year. My d and her roomies all had lofts and want them again next year. The girls rented a storage area for their beds. It is costing them ten dollars each a month. The storage facility is close and they were able to place a great deal of furniture (a futon, lamps, etc) in storage. The storage facility has been a great help. It was extremely clean and is very convenient to add or remove items.

Do you have a name for this storage company? Or, better yet, a phone no. or address? thanks...

S is using Public Storage. You can google their website and look for the Columbia SC location. Its down by the football stadium(Rosewood drive maybe?).He looked at a few different ones and it was by far the cleanest and best run.He is paying more than Birdie's D though.I havent heard of anyone being able to pay 10$ a month!
S 's is costing about 100 each for two of them for the4 months use,so about 200 overall. There was some sort of initial set up fee, but also an advertised discount so it equalled out. There are larger units more kids could share, but they are more expensive so everyones price seems to come out the same..about 48-53$ a month.

Birdie
where did your D find such cheap storage?

Chevy Case...I sent you a message with the phone number, address etc.

Sorry for any confusion about the cost, i think the word "girls" got lost in the post.

My d is sharing the storage unit with three other girls, therefore, they each pay $10.00 a month. The girls have quite a large amount of "stuff" futon, televisions, lamps, desk chairs, book shelves, pots and pans, etc. and there is still room for more.

$43.00 a month.
We received a special....the first month was $1.00. There was a $19.00 administration.

Greenville

The girls all purchased their lofts, therefore, they didn't have to turn them in before finals. I don't recall how economical it was but they didn't have to deal with turning in the bed during finals.

The girls wanted a futon, which they placed under one of the lofts. They placed extra drawers, shoe racks etc. under the other loft. It really worked out well for them.

FYI

Capstone also has a limit on how high the loft can be because they are concerned about scratching the ceiling due to asbestos....it is an old building like many old dorms on other campuses and they, like others, have not dome asbestos remediation.

The storage facility near the stadium is very new and climate controlled. D is sharing a large space with 4 others and the cost per person for the whole summer (with insurance) is $65. First month rent was free with a rental greater than 3 months so we actually are only paying for June, July and August despite moving in May 5th and with auto payment they deducted an additional ten percent. All-in-all we thought it was a very good deal when compared to what we paid in Chapel Hill (actually Durham) two years ago for a not so nice facility for our S.

Wondering about the used lofts that are sold in Bates lot on move-in day. If Son decides that day he needs one for more floor space, does anyone remember what the price is? Are they sold by individuals who would want cash,or is this handled by a loft company? Will the used loft materials fit in the car trunk to take back to the dorm?

I know this is an old post but can greenville or someone tell me if anyone replied to or knows the answers to greenville’s question about the lofts sold in Bates lot on move in day?
I ended up buying my loft instead of renting it. (I think the cost difference was negligible at the time, but don’t exactly remember.)

Anyways, I was able to take it in my parents SUV from Columbia to the upstate in SC at the end of the year with little trouble.

Check Facebook for people selling lofts. Often, sophomores try to sell their lofts from the previous year and usually post on Facebook.
