HI GUYS, IM CHADBRAD123 AND MY GPA IS AN 11.5 AND MY SAT IS A 6530.

I swear to god, it seems as though everyone on this site has a 4.0 gpa (weighted) or higher, and even when they're not weighted they're still higher than 4.0. Why don't all of you stop lying about your grades and actually tell us what you really have. Nobody knows who you are behind your account, and don't worry, your friends, whom you've also lied to about your grades, aren't going to find you on here either. I find it really hard to get accurate information on this site when everyone on here is applying to a 85% acceptance rate college with a 4.3 GPA and a 2350 SAT and are still asking, "WILL I GET IN?!?!?!?!?!?!" Seriously, nobody's going to judge you, I don't care if your GPA is actually a 1.5, I could care less, you can help the community by helping yourself and not lying about your grades. It really doesn't add up when I look through SAT and ACT question forums on this site and see that everyone is arguing about who's right and who's wrong when everyone is getting a 2400 SAT or a 36 ACT score. Now I know that not everyone lies about their grades, there are obviously people who are genuinely smart, and I'm not pointing fingers at anyone either. But I know for a fact that a lot of you lie. If everyone on this site told the truth, which I can guarantee about 80% of you don't, then we'll all be able to create time machines and travel through time within the next 10 years. If the thousands, maybe even 100's of thousands of you actually told the truth then this site would be better for everyone, including the people that lie. So please, do everyone a favor and stop lying.

Alright, dude, I’m calling you out. Point to just one post that you think contains a lie about grades or scores, and prove to me it’s a lie. You may very well be right, but you don’t know it “for a fact.”

I never said I know for a fact that certain people are lying, I said I know for a fact that people are lying, a lot of them.

“Now I know that not everyone lies about their grades, there are obviously people who are genuinely smart, and I’m not pointing fingers at anyone either. But I know for a fact that a lot of you lie.”

I’m saying I know it as a fact as a general statement. Like you can say, “I know for a fact that a lot of people don’t wear their seat belts when in a car.” You don’t know exactly who, but it’s obvious that many people don’t wear their seat belts when driving or as a passenger.

Many of those that post their grades probably are not lying. I think there are more people at the higher end of the GPA searching for college info in general than those at the mid or low end of the spectrum. Though I think some my round up or stretch the truth a little about their ECs - just my opinion.

That being said, I do think it is funny seeing people that post almost perfect scores and then are worried sick that they won’t get into HYP. The thing with HYP is that even with perfect or nearly perfect scores there is no guarentee so these people should never assume that they can get into any of them - they should always have a back up college or two. If they get in over most of the others that applied it is more luck than skill.

And just for the record, at the end of my junior year I had a 3.68 UW GPA. I really have problems with multiple choice test (mental blocks) so I never got better than a 1670 SAT and 26 ACT but I was accepted at two LACs and one university so far. Those were all early and I will be waiting a little for the RD ones. I also got decent merit scholarships to each of them as well.

@AmaranthinD, maybe 80% is a bit of an over exaggeration, but the amount of 4.0 GPA’s and higher and perfect and near perfect SAT and ACT scores is a bit ridiculous. There are thousands of people on this site, maybe even 100’s of thousands, and there is no way that possibly more than 50% of them have GPA’s over or just under 4.0 it’s not an easy feat, and if they’re scores were so amazing then they shouldn’t even have to worry about getting into certain colleges because.

@mibsprincess, I wouldn’t say that many aren’t lying. I’ve tried finding people in my GPA and SAT range who are doing chance me’s and other college type things to see my chances. Most of the people are saying that they have GPA’s of 3.3 and up and are scared to see if they’ll get in. Meanwhile I have a 2.2 GPA and a 27 ACT and I’ve gotten into most of them. It may be because I go to a very competitive school so they weight it more and that I do have some very unique and very helpful extra curricular’s, but who knows. It’s very annoying having to worry even more about college decisions when people can’t give me a straight answer if they got in or not. Keep in mind these are colleges whose GPA acceptances are at about 2.8-3.5 with ACT’s at 25-29.

It’s College Confidential shock. What you’re feeling is somewhat normal. College Confidential, far from reflecting the college-bound community at large, reflects a disproportionate amount of 4.0, 15 AP class, 2200+ overachievers who are headed for the top 20 colleges. Many of us are paranoid and overmeticulous, which is how we got those numbers in the first place.

Of course not 50% of the thousands of people on this site have those numbers, although many of the people anxious enough to post “Chance Me’s” do. Those who do choose to post probably aren’t lying. Why would they? It doesn’t make sense.

Why do you find it “ridiculous” that there are at least several thousand smart, high-scoring, high-achieving students in this world with you, and that they would be interested in going to college, and they would be interested in their chances for a particular college?

Just understanding that some high schools give a 1 pt bump for an Honors class can explain a lot of the high stats (my son never took an onlevel class except PE and Beg Band - can’t imagine how high his GPA would be if he got a point for all his A’s in Honors classes). That’s why I really don’t like GPA comparisons, at least across high schools - some of them give a point for everything, others just for AP or IB, and others none at all, just a pat on the back. Same with ranking - at my sons high school a lot of kids would take AP classes online or during the summer just to bump up their ranking. This was the only time I ever complained to the school system because I do not believe classes taken outside of class should affect class ranking, including dual enrollment (they can get credit and apply to their GPA for the class in HS and College - just don’t change their HS ranking). IMHO they should not be ranked against their fellow classmates because they were not in class with the same pressures as the kids in class at the time they earned their grade.

A 4.0 weighted GPA isn’t “perfect” like a 4.0 unweighted GPA is. Every high school calculates weighted GPA differently, though, so people shouldn’t post their weighted GPA without a scale. Weighted GPA is often on a 5.0 scale or higher, so someone with a 4.0 could have gotten lots of Bs and Cs.

You’re also overestimating the difficulty of getting straight As at most high schools. Most high schools have a ton of grade inflation…it’s not surprising that people on a college admissions forum tend to have near-perfect GPAs. People with 1.5 GPAs don’t spend their free time searching for college admissions advice on the Internet.

I don’t believe many people lie on here…no one on here is especially impressed by claims of high grades and test scores, because we see it all the time. Someone who wanted to impress people by lying about their stats would be better off going to a forum with a lot of credulous underachievers.

The only way you could “know for a fact” that somebody is lying would be to search through their post history for inconsistencies. If you care enough to do that, you’re worse than a liar.

Well, this IS a website for college-bound students, parents, and other individuals. Most of the people on this site are high level students who are looking for more information on colleges and college admissions. If you don’t care about school (which a lot of people with low GPAs don’t) then I don’t understand why you would want to come to this site other than advice on what steps to get back on track. A lot of people with low GPAs generally just don’t really care, don’t want help, and won’t go to college. That’s why there’s so many gifted individuals on this site, and that’s why there’s so many high GPAs.

I think of it this way: the only students I know from my school that would potentially use this site (though I doubt they actually do) would be students who are in the top 5-10% of the graduating class - the kids who spend lunches with me talking about college, who are in and out of their guidance counselors office on a daily basis, who lose sleep at night thinking about Critical Reading scores and ranks – if you take this bunch of say, 20 kids, from every school in the country, and amass them into one web community, you’re gonna end up with a disproportionate amount of high scores and grades.

Kids with average SAT scores and grades (<1600 & 3.1) will probably not be so consumed with selective college admissions as many of them kind of just bank on the idea of going to their local state school (assuming it isn’t UCLA or Chapel Hill) – and go on with their lives. Kids who have those types of scores on here are anomalies and more than likely have some sort of circumstance which rendered those types of scores - kids with average grades and SAT scores who received such results because of apathy will not suddenly wake up in the middle of the night with nightmares of the acronym “HYP” racing through their head.

It makes no sense to lie about your grades here - my grades aren’t really CC-standard, in fact, a 3.8 and a 2000 might make some of our particularly high achievers shudder with disgust, but I’ve never really felt compelled to enhance the truth (or, blatantly lie) by supplementing sections with an addition 100 points or anything. Its the internet. Literally no one cares. I mean, I might read about one poster getting into three ivies and mouth the word “wow” to myself but I promptly move on with my life. People needn’t be consumed with the standards of others on a website…

I don’t think folks here “lie” so much as sometimes create stats that they are hoping to have in the near future…so they might have an 1980 on their SAT but they will say they have a 2230 on it because they’re “planning” to have that later…and they’re interested that if they were able to get that score, do people here think that would increase their chances. So I do think there’s a bit of testing the waters…to see if the efforts are worth it…
