London School of Economics - Accounting

I am an American student who's considering LSE. I want to major in accounting and information systems, and I've always liked the UK. My only problem is that I'm not sure how a British degree would affect my accounting career. Do I need different certifications if I were to be an accountant in the UK versus the US? Do I still get the same education?

I'm also applying to other business schools like USC Marshall, NYU Stern, and UVA McIntire. In a hypothetical situation, should I pick LSE over those schools if I get accepted to all four? Is LSE worth the financial cost and location?

Well considering that the US follows US Generally Accepted Accounting Principles rules and the UK follows the UK Generally Accepted Accounting Practice, there are probably some differences.

I would think most US students who go to LSE would go into the financial industry, such as banking. If you wanted to work in the US as an accountant…I would just pick an American university (accredited by AACSB).

First, LSE isn’t worth adding to your debt over an American university, especially if your other options are the ones you mentioned. I knew someone in high school who was obsessed with going to Cambridge because they went to the UK for a week in jr. high. I thought they were an idiot, but if you actually know what living in the UK is like and want to study, work and move there, LSE might be fine.

However, if you’re like that person in high school who just wanted to go to a British school, you might want to think this through a bit. For example, if you want to sit for the CPA exam, you’ll need certain credits from an AACSB accredited university. Again, If you don’t want to practice accounting in the US, LSE would be okay.

Thanks for replying.

I don’t want to remain in the UK permanently, so I guess doing a study abroad is more reasonable. Plus, I want to get a CPA, and if possible a CCA, but most definitely a CPA.

A little study abroad is a much better idea for your situation and LSE is a very good destination.

Great, thank you everyone!
