I'd love some help about how to keep packing to a minimum since we'll be travelling to BS by plane? I read the various packing lists and can't imagine how to get just the basic mimimums in a trunk and large duffel (my goal). I plan to pick up supplies and sundries at a nearby Target/Walmart, but the clothes, bed linens, towels, winter coats, shoes, and electronics alone seem overwhelming. Any tips from those who didn't have the luxury of packing up the minivan? thanks.

Send a boxload or two of stuff UPS ahead of time. It’s not that expensive.

I packed just my clothes, shoes, etc. I recommend getting the linens, towels, and especially a comforter once you get there. I know many stores offer a service where you buy what you want online or at your home store and they have it ready for you at a store near your school. Takes almost no time and you don’t have to worry about them running out. We also packed up a bag of my sweaters and cold weather clothes and my dad brought them when he visited. It would also work to send them when the weather starts to change.

Does [E & R Cleaners, Campus Laundry, Retail, and Uniform Rental](http://www.thecampuslaundry.com) ring a bell?

My daughter and I flew to her boarding school. I packed a few items in a carry on duffel and I used my two allotted suitcases (southwest airlines) to pack my daughter’s clothes. Her father and I brought up her boots, sweaters, coat, etc on parent’s weekend. We ordered a foam mattress pad, comforter, and pillows through Overstock.com and they were delivered to the school for a flat $2.95. The school started accepting packages about 2 weeks before classes began.

i was told that i could send things and have ordered things (like comforter and stuff) sent to the school anytime in august

Agree with Sarum…send along some stuff ahead of time. Don’t overdo the packing. You can always buy/add stuff as you see fit. It’s a pain in the a__ to have too much to start.

In a word --Space Saving Bags (the ones you remove the air with a vacuum)!
Those bags are our savior since we can’t load up the mini van to take DS to school.
BS starts in a little over a week and we plan to take only the alloted suitcases on the plane to avoid surcharges. We shipped 2 boxes with linens, towels, pillows, etc. We’ll then supplement at Parents Weekend with winter clothes and whatever we missed.

I sent linens ahead via mail, then she just brought clothing in two suitcases and a carry-on. Once we got there we bought school supplies including a printer and she left all of that there over the summer. Coming from California she didn’t have any winter jackets etc. and we ended up ordering those on-line and having them delivered to her, if you are already in possession of those items I would imagine they could be mailed. She also left those in storage at the school over the summer. She is going back in a few days with the same two suitcases and one carry-on, plus her backpack with her laptop in it.

Is the summer storage expensive? How much do you have to pay for the storage of “hardware”, i.e. small funiture, printer, lights and linens etc., or is there somewhere online we can check on the pricing?

PAParent101 – check out www.collegeboxes.com. They have summer storage options for the various college and boarding school campuses.

Yes! The price list is quite comprehensive. Great info - in case we need the service. Thanks, Kali.

Depending on your child’s school and dorm there may be free storage. My daughter got enough at her dorm at Exeter to get her through, she did tell me though that she threw out some towels that didn’t fit, but buying new towels is cheaper than storing them so I was okay with that.

Has anyone ever ordered from residence hall linens? I like the packages they offer and the free shipping.

Emdee- I strongly considered them a few weeks ago but ultimately went with dormbuys.com simply because we ordered a lot of other items from this site and I wanted to keep packages to a minimum. (Despite our best efforts, I think we overwhelmed the campus post office, lol.) I especially liked the RHL packages as well.

I wonder if I said this already. But for those students flying by themselves, I just tried ordering her personal items from Walgreens and having them delivered to her at school. I hope it works out - does anyone have any experience with this? This is my daughter’s first time going at the beginning of the year by herself and she is more than a little worried about getting herself settled in on her own.
