Long Island Competitions

I don't know if there is a specific section to post this, but I have tried to Google LI competitions using many search parameters to no avail. I am a rising junior and a Horn player. If you can list any competitions you can find, I'd really appreciate.

Many local, regional orchestras, symphonies, chamber societies offer competition based scholarships for hs kids.

They can be hard to find. We've used instrument specific publications to locate, but google orchestras, symphonies, chamber societies (by name if you know them) look for those in your area and search their education or outreach tabs.

In our experience between HS director and private teacher most of the local competitions that could be were identified. We did find some that neither had listed by being on this forum, and by Google.

laxman, I do know of a couple in the Fairfield county (CT), Hudson Valley (NY) areas. I do not know if they are limited to state residents students, but can direct you if you're interested. Post here or PM me. My offer is open to all.

Sure, just post the info on them and i'll look into it. I'm up for most things. Thanks

Off the top of my head, google:

Stamford Symphony
Norwalk Symphony
Hudson Valley Philharmonic
Bridgeport Symphony (Carlson-Horn competition; that's the name, NOT instrument)
New Haven Symphony
Hartford Symphony
Ridgefield Symphony
Waterbury Symphony
Eastern CT Symphony Orchestra (New London, use ferry from LI rather than making the loop on I95, but depending on where you are on LI it may sense sense to use ferry for a number of these)
some of the smaller NY orchestras and chamber societies as well

As I said, check the edcuation/outreach/community or scholarship tab/link once on their home page.

My recollection is a number of these are annual, and geared to hs students as scholarships, although some are tiered and may have a junior division award for middle school age kids.

A couple are open to age 30 ish, and can be stiff competition, with undergrad/grad/preprofessionals from NYC, Boston, New England corridor top schools. (Hudson Valley, New London come to mind here, but they may be tiered as well.)

Good luck.

Not specific to LI, but certainly available to horn players on LI - as well as the rest of the world. Uses a recording; no travel involved (unless you win!)

IHS Online - IHS Solo Contest

laxman, Nassau Community College has a competitive-entry jazz band that a lot of the top musicians aim for. Well, I know they meet at NCC, but perhaps the band itself is under another umbrella. Try googling Nassau County jazz band. That is, if you are a jazz horn player. The man who directs it is a frequent instructor in the All-County Festivals--do you always try out for All County and All State?

yeah, i've made all-county every year i've auditioned, and all-state this year (rising junior). But I think jazz isn't really my style. Thanks anyway tho. and thanks violadad and binx. I'll look into those.
