Well unfortunately it’s nothing new. What is new is that it is no longer swept under the rug and that’s a good thing. If you don’t work for it, you don’t deserve it.

@ljs1995-Granted there are some people who will be quick to pounce on the whole “spoiled rich brats” theme but I’m quite sure you and along with the other students at your school are darn good students and have honestly earn your grades.

With that being said, it’s nothing new with richie rich in the good ol’ boy network cheating and getting away with it. There is definitely a mindset of them that feels they don’t have to work for anything because they have a silver spoon in their mouth and daddy’s name to boot. They know that and use it to their advantage. It has gone on more than what you may think it hasn’t.

The difference? The internet lets it all out today.

"They make it seem like it’s our fault that we are fortunate. It’s not. "

Nobody is making it your fault or your peers. As a matter of fact, you guys are truly blessed. Wish I had those opportunities when I was a child and so do many others.

I stand by my criticism of the NYPost , quoting their source , the investigation is “looking into several students.” How do they make the leap into a “cheating ring”?

“There are hearings taking place right now that are ongoing,” the source said. "I know that the superintendent is talking to various people, including the principal and other administrators, to get to the bottom of what’s going on.

“I know that they are looking into several students.”

A few students paying a college student to taking their SAT is cheating and wrong , but hardly an “SAT ‘cheat’ ring”; the sub headline “Kids attend posh LI school” , makes it a better story for the haters!

The story is made more sensational because the students at the High School are affluent , who cares what kind of cars they drive. This unfairly maligns the student body of the school.

I remember decades ago that you had to give a fingerprint when you took your SATs. But I suppose that the fingerprint only came into play if you were accused of having someone else take your test–you could prove it was you by comparing the fingerprint on the test with your own.

I’m sure that knowing that you had to give a fingerprint was a deterrent for many to try to cheat.

I have sat for the SAT twice and SAT subject tests three times. Three times my ID was glanced at; the other two times I never even had to take it out of my bag.

Ive often thought of how easy it would be to take the ACT/SAT for someone else. I’ve jokingly told my friends ill do it for 10,000$ since their scholarships would be three times that. Of course I never would, but it makes me wonder how often it happens.

lsj1995 - I feel for you. I’m sure you are a good student who has worked hard. Being born into an affluent family is not a sin.

Cheaters exist at all income levels. I grew up in a blue collar town and there were rumors of one classmate taking the SAT for another (30 years ago!), neither particularly affluent.

Yeah, its not unheard of for kids to cheat on the SAT, but this seem to be taking it to a new level when a college student flies home to a wealthy NYC suburb to take the tests for other kids at $1,000 a pop. My question is how can parents not know that theyr kids are doing this? My first thought was how a kid might have the extra grand to pay off somebody to do it, but I suppose its not too difficult if the kid has a job, or maybe gets gifts from relatives for birthdays, bar mitzvahs or something like that. Still, I’d whale mine if I found out he’d done something like this. And i’d do so even knowing that the high-stakes testing thing has gotten out of hand all around (like the public schools in Atlnata and DC). I’d whale the teachers and those responsible there too if I could.

Back when I had my first professional job out of college, I was shocked when the owners asked staff to come in to work on their kids college assignment that was in the same discipline as our business. This was over the Thanksgiving weekend when kid was home from school & the project was due the next week. My dad wouldn’t even let me pay someone to type up my college papers when I was working 30 hours a week & busy with my senior project; he told me it was my job to be a student and that I had to type my own stuff. So I was really stunned that anyone would think it was OK to have 5 professional staff members work on a project while their kid gave direction. Of course said kid is now running the business so maybe it was a managerial learning lesson…

My kids had to present a picture ID with their SAT registration to gain entrance into the site. How did this kid take the test for others? How did he even get into the site?

Edit…I see now that he used false ID cards too…yikes.
