Being from out-of-state might help, but the Engineering school is tough to get into. Have you visited the university? The Engineering campus is a bus ride away from the main campus and that was a big turn-off to me, even though I know it’s a very good program academically. Good luck to your son wherever he winds up.

It’s significantly harder to get in OOS than in state.

Unfortunately, a low SAT / ACT (especially in math) combined with a really low class rank and out of state status makes Michigan a reach.

UMich CoE is quite a reach for OP despite slightly above-average GPA due to low test scores, out of state status, and a lack of engineering-related extra curriculars i.e. robotics club.

That job at a lab could be weighted pretty highly, but I’m not exactly sure what went down. Anyways, I’m gonna give you a low-match only b/c of out of state.

The kid just took to more practice exams in each area over this weekedn.

SAT - M 680 - 710
R 600 - 620
W 650 - 680

1930 - 2010

ACT - C- 29 - 30
M - 29 - 30
E - 31 - 33
Other areas were 28 to 29

Getting better…We just hope it could be applied to the next set of testing in May. Plenty of practice & prep between now and then…and plenty of scrabble games with a dictionary.

michael543212345 - We were hoping the lab job would be be high profile, the program is through ASME and another group and it is well known in the gov. community. Thank you for picking up on this.

Definitely not many people are in ASME! Would definitely be looked high upon. Personally, I worked at a science lab at Michigan during the summer through some connections (and will again probably for another few years) and it definitely has brought tons of benefits. In my opinion, your son should just focus right now on maintaining his GPA, and maybe during the summer he can prep an hour a day or so and take it again senior fall year to get the dream score

Seems like there is a ton of pressure and you are pressing really hard. Reporting back on results practice tests over the weekend? Why does it have to be Michigan? The kid is an athlete, working 2 jobs, and spending all free time studying for the SAT and feeling high pressure to move his scores up significantly? There are a ton of schools with engineering in your backyard (RPI, WPI, Trinity, Stevens, Lehigh, Lafayette, Bucknell, etc, etc, and some of these may be reaches at this point).

^You’re assuming. Maybe the kid pushes himself to do all that. We’ve been given not much context of their personal lives(and we shouldn’t) so you can’t just assume that all of this stuff was caused by the parents.

Perhaps you are correct Michael, but the posts are clearly coming from the Dad as indicated and they seem pretty frantic to me. Folks come on asking to be “chanced,” so does it help not to be honest? Even if the kids takes multiple sets of practice tests every weekend and gets into the hoped-for range designated by Dad it is still a reach for Michigan IMHO from everything else I have read, especially as an OOS.

Michael543212345…thank you for the positive feedback and thoughts. It looks like we will make the trip, the kid wants to see the school. He can do his thing I will find the food!

finalchild, Respectfully, you could not be more wrong in all your “perceptions”.

Sounds like things are really moving ahead. From “Long shot” in title of thread to making the trip within 4 days. Best of luck.

The trip is all about him with the exception of the food. I’ll be doing my MVF research so I can partake in making sure that I get great food.

My DS…aha, he can do the college thing.

By the way he has most of the schools you noted on his list (I checked last night). One remains the others are lined out, and others are still I guess being researched. He started getting into this last summer. There is no doubt in my mind he will get what he wants. Respectful to UofM this is not his first choice. UoM is listed in his area 2, there is only one school in area 1.

On his list of goals he has three areas:

Area 1 is his No.1 (1 school listed)
Area 2 he noted as “Back-up to area 1” ( 5 schools listed)
Area 3 he noted as “If all else fails - Punt” (2 schools listed)

I have no idea what the area crazy stuff is all about. The only thing he has got us up to speed on is his No.1. He just firmed it up when we went for a visit. After goint to 7 colleges he walked in and 5 min. after being there he said. “Everything I expected, this is it, my No.1”. At some level parents have to know what our kids are doing. As a parent I wish he would stay an hour away so we could see him and he could come home when he wants; however, as parents he has to do what he feels is best for him.

I just want good food!
