Long term illness? US/international student at McGill? Read very carefully

Since it’s application season I thought it might be useful to post this for any families who are thinking of sending a kid to McGill. If your kid has a chronic (long term) illness, such as diabetes, arthritis or anything that might be considered “pre-existing”, the student health insurance plan will only pay out a lifetime maximum of $10,000 CAD. So if your kid were to have a complication, say they needed hospitalization, you would out of coverage in about, oh, two days.

Note that it is not enough that your child is “stable” or has their condition “well-managed”, e.g. they take daily meds or whatever. If they’ve seen a doctor in the months preceding getting to McGill, that counts as pre-existing.

Caveat emptor!!
