So, I've heard that longboards (as well as bikes) are pretty popular methods of travel on the Stanford campus. I've always dreamed of myself carving it up on a longboard, but I've never had one and, thus, do not really know what to get (if I end up getting one). I'm just looking for a simple board that doesn't have a huge price tag.....any suggestions?

^ get a skateboard, that may be what I'll be getting from class to class with

^Really? I have a skateboard, but I've always wanted a longboard...they're super expensive though......perhaps I'll just stick with that.....do you skate a lot Sal?

^ I don't really skate, I peddle
LOL
But my friend has been trying to teach me, but I just haven't had time cus I have a very full agenda just about everyday...I basically spend small intervals of time on here whenever I have time....i know, that's pretty lame...hahaha

Do u skate a lot?

is the campus too big to simply walk around?

^^I've never visited so I'm not sure, but it's what I've heard.....a lot of hills as well, but it will keep us skinny! Lol. Gah, I am so excited....I'm going to Stanford!

@omg...well, it is the largest campus in the nation

I'd go longboard over skateboard. First, it's easier to skate with a longboard ( more footing). Second, you can coast longer, so you don't have to kick as much. And a good longboard, for a good price? How much are you willing to spend? Just so I know what you should get

actually, what would i know...i don't know how to remove brackets...so...

^ haha...all the animosity
LOL

^^Yeah, I skate quite a bit...wanna learn? Lol, I'm basically the only girl in my area that skates so, I hang with a lot of guys at times.....

^ is that a teaching offer?...LOL
Watch, we'll be like total skate buddies
Hahahaha

wanna answer my question so i can help you?

dpattz, i think you responded to my thread in the Stanford facebook group haha.

And not to sound mean to any future, fellow long boarders, but PLEASE try to purchase and USE your board, before you come to Stanford. practice beforehand!
1) there's nothing more embarrassing than stumbling over your boar, pushing mongo, or in worst case, falling and dropping all your stuff.
2) it gives those of us who truly love the sport and do it because it is an efficient and fun way of transportation, a bad name. I can't even recall how much crap i've gotten for saying i'm going to long board at college, because I was associated with the kids who do it just because it is "cool"

Again, not to start strife or call anyone out, but i just am giving some useful, practical advice. Good luck on your long board adventure!

Whoa, last we heard, you were all riven with indecision about whether to accept that full ride to UW Madison.

Now our Hamlet is ideating about longboards in Palo Alto. Guess you got over that UW dilemma as fast as predicted. Unless, that is, you've got a thread on the UW subforum about cross country skis vs. snowshoes.

^^haha, I'm just planning for both futures. I wasn't really in a dilemma, but my parents were and are still deciding. I'm pretty sure they'll let me go with Stanford though ;). Any suggestions on boards??

And, Colbs, thanks for the Sector9 suggestion....I checked out the site and actually entered a contest for a free board! Lol, I'm hoping for that. Also, I found out that my friend actually makes longboards, so I'm going to check out that option....anyway, I'm for sure going to practice before next fall, so don't worry! haha. I'll (hopefully) not make a fool of myself.

I wanna learn how to Ripstick well, and do that at Stanford, as well as bike. Anyone know what that is?

I think they target a younger audience... but my little cousin has one, and I have a lot of fun on it :D

please dont

^^Agreed. When people do tricks, it's just like a normal skateboard, but if you actually used that to get around classes, you'd look like, well, a huge fool! haha. Wow. Plus, that video on the website is majorly seizure-inducing.

Why not? I can't skateboard to save my life. And I think its just like a skateboard, except easier and with two wheels. The only real difference is with skateboarding you push off with your feet or whatever, and with the ripstick you wave your back foot to keep up the momentum. I don't see the big deal.
