What major/school are you interested in?
Male or female?

You definitely need to raise your SAT scores… a lot.
Also, don’t forget Rice requires 2 SAT subject tests.

Your schedule looks pretty good (well, Prep for Parenting looks like a blow-off class to me, but idk what it entails)… I think you could mention to them that you wanted to take Bio and Phys but that they didn’t have enough ppl, etc (which is totally unfair btw).

Your awards look really good.

I’d say you have a good shot IF you raise that SAT score. Maybe take the ACT and see how you do. Rice will understand that you probably haven’t recieved most of the opportunities that other applicants may have, since you’re in RGV and no offense, it’s one of the poorest areas. You’re also a URM, so that’s a plus.

On a side note, I really like the RGV area – very pretty.

Hope I helped! :)

I am a male who plans on taking Computer Science in the School of Engineering. I already took my subject tests in Math IIC and US History. How did you know about the RGV?

Well, male helps you also… Computer Science definitely makes your awards relevant.

How’d I know about RGV? Um, idk, I live in TX, lol. And I like to go to South Padre. :)

The SAT needs to go up… its a killer right now

But raise them and it will be fine

no chance right now with that sat score

I’m from the McAllen area as well. Is it me or does it seem like everyone from the RGV is applying to Rice this year?

Really? I’m the only person from my school or the other school in my area (Mission) that’s applying, I think… That would be awesome if a bunch of us RGV’ers got in though :)

I go to Sci-Tech in Mercedes and at least 10 people applied Early Decision. A LOT more will be applying regular… and with less than 800 undergrad spots, I’m afraid only a few RGV’ers will be getting in, especially since half of those spots end up going to out-of-state applicants. Best of luck, though :)

dont think that half are oos… but from the same area, you ust be the very best of the applicant pool from that area to get in

Ignore Digg1. Rice uses a holistic review, and is looking for a diverse group of students. They actively solicit Questbridge candidates, so I think you have a solid chance. :)

@anxiousmom
True, but OP’s score is simply way too low
SAT Reading 650 760
SAT Math 680 780
SAT Writing 640 740
1970 - 2280

wish you the best of luck.

well noobcake, the scores will hurt, but that doesnt mean an automatic rejection

“and with less than 800 undergrad spots”

There are many more than that. I don’t care to look up the yield, though.

I appreciate all the comments and opinions that all of you guys decided to contribute. I am retaking the SAT on Dec. 1st so hopefully I can get a better score to help strengthen my application. I know that I may not be the best student in the nation, but I fell in love with Rice (lol) when I visited the campus and I tried my best to convey myself at my Rice interview about a month ago. It’s all good because I have two other schools that appeal to me, but Rice is my #1 choice.

I’ll be sure to try my best this year!

Don’t we all…

Ditto :)

A big piece of advice I can give you is to do everything you can to convey that Rice is your #1 choice. Out of the 9 people who applied interim from my school, 4 were accepted, 4 were rejected, and 1 was deferred. That one was me. The 4 people who got in had stellar stats, while the people who didn’t (myself included) had just okay stats. Mine were not as good as the people who got rejected, but the only other distinction I can see between them and myself is that I did everything in my power to convey that Rice was my number one choice.

For regular decision…similar story. 2 rejected, one accepted, one waitlisted. The waitlist was me. I sent a letter telling them that If I were accepted, I would attend Rice. Three days later I got in.

i think your race might help you. i think you have a good shot actually. buuut i’m not an expert on rice admission.
