Ling 101 replaced Ling 30 which my S took as a freshman, he is now a rising senior. It's an intro class and will depend on the person teaching it. He loved the class and teacher (not Renn) and it was one of the reasons he decided to major in lingusitics as one of his two majors.

right now i'm signed up for linguistics 101 and everything i've heard about it has been positive, but i just don't understand how it's going to be that interesting. what made this class so interesting?

Both my brothers really liked ling in college (one of them at Chapel Hill and then the other minored in it at Dartmouth).

I think that it's interesting for the same reasons that psychology can be for some people. It focuses on things you'd never think of focusing on. Your own language, how it came to be the way it is, etc. It's also not super explored so there's still a novelty to the discipline. It sounds like a lot of fun!

I'm really hoping to get into Ling 101 first semester--I'm thinking I might pick linguistics up as a second major if I like it enough and get enough AP credits outta the way this year to free up some space; I've always been really interested in language development and etymology.

Psyc 245 is a great course. You will really enjoy it. I took it with Prof Lowman and I can't say I've taken a course with Prof Wiss. If you are thinking about majoring in Psych then I think you will like this course.
