Pleaseee Chance :D
I really like GT because you don't need teacher recs
xD

Thanks!

At first glance your chances are not very good, but we really need to know what your GT calculated GPA would be to give you better feedback. You can calculate this by only counting academic classes and giving AP classes .5 credit on a standard 4-point GPA scale. To give you an idea of the competitiveness of GT admissions, the below numbers represent the middle 50% of last years accepted students:

Mid 50% GPA 3.72 - 4.06
Mid 50% SAT 1900-2130
Mid 50% ACT 27 - 32

As you can see, you GPA is far below Tech’s average and your SAT scores are only at the 25th percentile mark. Your extracurricular involvement is also nothing particularly outstanding, as you have held no leadership positions and it appears as though orchestra is the only thing you have really been dedicated to. Why did you quit track? What have you done as a member of those other organizations? Why are you worried about teacher recs?

Tech is definitely a long shot for you, so be sure to apply to other universities whose average stats are more in line with yours.

Best of luck in your college search!

I can’t tell you what your chances are, but perhaps you can estimate your own chance from my specs.

I am an international student with an E-2 visa. I’ve studied in US for 7 years before applying to GT, and my GPA was 3.82. My school does not weigh GPA, but they do give extra 3 points for honors and 5 for AP. My rank was 70/600.

I took 6 AP tests. Biology, Chemistry, Calculus BC, Physics C, APUSH, and APWH. I got 5 on Biology and Calculus and 4 on others.

I did not take SAT, but I did take SAT II. Math-800 Bio-750 and Chem-750.
ACT- 32,33,34 with 8 on writing.
(I suggest you take any SATII’s available and ACT before it’s too late. Just try it, you might be pleasantly surprised.)

I did not have much of EC. Orchestra for 2~3, one award from math competition, and some hobbies such as writing and model building that I kept for about 3 years. Needless to say, my EC section of application was kinda blank.

My essay wasn’t too good. I tried really hard to show my passion, but in doing so it became little unorganized and rough. I read it few weeks after I got my decision, and I saw tons of stuff that could’ve been improved. I suggest you start wrting your essays NOW.

My rec was good, I guess. One from BIO teacher was probably glowing, and one from my advisor was probably good at best.

I applied for early decision, and I say I got in pretty easy.

If you really want my opinion, I say your GPA is low, but your EC’s, Essays, and Recs can definitely make up for it.

1 tip of advice.
If you have f-ing hard english teacher in your school, have that teacher read your essays. I probably should’ve done the same.
DO NOT! DO NOT let your standard easy-going english teacher read it, because he’s just going to tell you it looks awsome and point out some grammar mistakes at best.
Have someone totally r-ape your essays.

@ tmzkdl2668: Georgia Tech does not consider SAT II’s or recommendations (unless you are a semi-finalist for the President’s Scholarship)

A great essay could have a very positive impact on the overall application, but you would need both awesome subject matter and awesome writing abilities. Teachers can help you with the writing, but if all you can write about is how much you love robots (or something along those lines) without anything unique to back it up your essay will never become great.

If you are truly set on Tech, you need to retake the SAT or take the ACT and score significantly higher to attempt to make up for your grades, and you need to convince admissions through your essay that you truly have a passion and will be a great addition to the Tech community despite your less than stellar GPA.

But still, he/she may want to take SAT II for one reason.
Credits
I got 4 on AP Chemistry, and you need 5 to get a credit in GT. However, they do give you a credit if you have >750 on SAT II Chem. I’m ME major, and I only need to take one Chem class, which I’m exempt from thanks to SAT II.

Check the credit transfer chart, talk to the advisor… and if your AP score is low, than you definitely should take SAT II.

And about the rec… I probably confused it with some other college. Sorry about that : )

“I applied for early decision, and I say I got in pretty easy.”

Just curious: how do you know this? Are most internationals who apply admitted?

People admitted early are typically well above average, so it is fair to say that tmzkdl2668 got in “pretty easy.”

However, most international applicants are not admitted. The admission rate for international applicants is quite a bit lower than US resident applicants, but the stats for international applicants are also markedly lower. Your chances as an international applicant are the same as OOS applicants (marginally lower than in-state applicants).

Ok so, I got in with this:
–SAT:
M:750
CR: 580
W:590
–SAT2(even though u dont need it) :
Math II: 800
Chem:780
Physics:760
–AP scores:
Bio:5
Chem:5
Physics C Mechanics:4
Physics C Elec&Mag: 5
Calc AB:5
–EC:
Nothing except for some tutoring in 10th grade, but other than that, nothing, at all, not even band or anything.
–GPA:
3.8 (unweighted)
4.2 (weighted)

So I basically got in based on my academic standing, and my essay was just above average, I got some help with that.

@Adelk001: Are you in-state?
