Looking at Competitive Schools: Canceling Scores a Good Idea or not

Good Evening CC users,

I just took my SAT today and felt I bombed the first three sections due to my intense nervousness that morning and got around 1900-2000 (around 650-700 for all sections). Thinking ahead, this score would be helpful for my admissions if I am applying to top competitive schools.

QUESTION 1:
I truly believe I can score significantly higher if I were to retake the test again. Do you think this is a wise choice?

QUESTION 2:
If I were to cancel my score, would that affect my transcript, records, at all?

In other words, if I cancel my score, even after I have taken it, would there be a "NAME: _______ SCORE: Cancelled" on my collegeboard record?

Thank you very much! Have a great day!

Colleges don't see that you cancelled a score. That'd just be stupid.

Maybe you're overthinking it. If you think you can do better, check and see if the college superscores. I've read that they really don't care whether it took you 4 tries to get that 2400 or 1 sitting. I really don't see the need to cancel scores unless you fell asleep during 3 sections or had an asthma attack.

You just completed a 4+ hour test, you were nervous, and maybe things are a little jumbled up in the brain region. But it's over. You probably did fine. Chill, bro.

thanks for the input.

yeah you're likely to be a little panicked about it still :P

Only you can decide if you need to cancel. All scores that aren't cancelled are on the record but every school that I have spoken to said only the best count. You could be pleasantly surprised and even if not you may learn from your test results. But if you are still looking at cancelling your deadline is tomorrow. If you do cancel it is as if you never took it. That is except for all the time and stress you already put into it. Good luck!

It is hard to say why but College Board does allow for this so I expect some people have had their reasons. My best guess is that they do it when they feel their results will significantly underrepresent what they believe their capabilities are for whatever reason. Stress, distraction, budgeting time poorly, bubbling incorrectly are a few that come to mind. This doesn't seem to be really important for the SAT I because most schools only count the best scores. Still people should know that they have this option. I would also add that it might be more critical for the SAT II if you thought you did poorly since many schools don't require these at all but once you take it it is part of the report that goes to every school.....Now that I think of it I suppose that if you are taking the ACT and SAT subject tests and you don't want the SAT I to blemish your record and you feel performance was not up to par this would be another reason to keep it off the record. The point is that the possiblity exists if the individual has the reason.
