Looking back now with regrets...

I applied to Rice in December and one part of its application asked that I tell them what other colleges I applied and I truthfully told them EVERY SINGLE college I applied to. Many of the other colleges I applied to are rank higher than Rice and a few are rank lower than Rice. Is this going to impact my decision in any way? Also I live in New York and I applied to schools all over the United States; a few in California, some in New York, one in Michigan, two in North Carolina, etc. So by telling them that I applied to many colleges that are far away from my home state, does that show that I am willing to go far away to attend college? Is that one way they interpret my college list? Also if anyone can tell me exactly what they use this information (if you have any idea that is) for that would also be a major help. Thanks.

I was wondering the same thing. I also told them every single school, which were all across the US.

I doubt it’s a terribly important part of your application. If you have the stats and demonstrated that you’re passionate about Rice, you should have a good chance no matter what you answered for that question.

I think I’d rather be in your position than mine. I didn’t put down any other colleges, because I applied ED, and ended up getting 0 aid. I can’t help but feel that if I had applied RD and applied to their competitors they would have been more likely to give me some aid.

yeah i think they asked about other colleges just to see what their competition is (perhaps are you likely to come to rice if you get in)…

My son applied rd and listed all schools- east, west and in the middle (we are Tx residents). He applied to two reach, three on par with Rice and two safety. He got in to the three par, Rice and the safety schools. He chose Rice because of the aid. I believe Rice might use this info as a guage to decide what, if anything, to offer. Ours was merit aid only.

Don’t sweat it at all – my son who’s currently a sophomore at Rice listed all the schools he was applying to (including Stanford, Princeton, Cornell, JHU, etc.) and Rice not only admitted him but offered him 2 merit scholarships. I guess they figured if they wanted him to attend Rice over one of his other choices, they had to woo him. It worked.

Interesting… So in most cases revealing your other schools does not negatively impact your decision? Nice.

Just out of curiosity, which NC schools did you apply to?

Duke and UNC

Think about it. They should know that people are unique. They’re not going to use against you any sort of stereotypes based on where you applied.

Also some of the schools I said I was going to apply to, I ended up not applying to. So my list is very long but in reality I did not apply to as many schools as I stated.

I told them all the schools lower than Rice. My Rice friends told me to do it since they’ll think Rice is my top choice. Unfortunately, me and my friends also figured I won’t get a likely letter since it seems like its my top choice and I won’t be going to HYP etc. I know some people who put all their HYP etc colleges on and got likelies, probably to try to draw them away from HYP etc.

I don’t think the amount of scholarship they give you is that much related to what other colleges you apply to. Some people who get into Rice are probably merited enough to get into the other schools they put down (Stanford, Princeton, Cornell, etc), so it’s not odd that they get a MERIT scholarship from Rice.

You don’t get scholarships b/c you put down all the names of the impressive schools you’re applying to. You get scholarships b/c you’re impressive.

I appplied to Rice RD and truthfully stated all schools I applied to. Not sure if that hurt (or helped) my chances. Personally I do not think a school as respected as Rice will use this info in making their acceptance decisions.

Me neither. :)

I don’t think this will negatively impact your decision at all. In fact it might help you; I’m guessing the fact that they know what colleges you are applying to allows them to see how badly they want you, thus encouraging them to give you more scholarships/try to attract you to rice in some other way
