Looking Beyond the Rankings

TK is correct. There are lots of caveats in using this data which I explain at my website. I was in a hurry here and didn’t. These are only people who received some sort of federal money, most likely unsubsidized Stafford loans. However, the loans are not included in the average, only grants. You can find out how many students are in the group by looking up the IPEDS numbers. They don’t appear on College Navigator.

As for the numbers not matching, they are probably from different years and both sets of data have been known for the inaccuracies. Furthermore, the CDS splits merit money from financial aid, IPEDS doesn’t. CDS is an average of all merit money only where IPEDS is only for one income category group. According to IPEDS in 2010-11, there were 48 students in the highest income category who received an average of $31,210 in grant aid, none-from the federal governemnt (Title IV).

I think the data is most useful in identifying schools least likely to provide merit aid. In other words, don’t be suprised when Santa Clara doesn’t provide anything for your straight A student.

This is the best thread ever. Thanks so much for pulling it together and adding to it so frequently.

^ the way i see it if you atted ivies, well good for you, but theres more to life than having good grades and going to presigous colleges.

^^or you’re not paying into the pyramid scheme that Penn, Columbia, and Cornell run. So you are really doing something with your life at Cornell Agriculture or at Chicago with some theoretical BS?

Why are you feeding the ■■■■■?

Let’s just all agree with friedman, OK? And then admit we are all failures.

Now, back to this excellent thread…

So glad to see this thread highlighting CHOICES. Just like there are many different makes and models of automobiles to meet the diverse wants and needs of consumers, I am glad that there are all shapes and sizes of educational choices for the diverse wants and needs of our children.

I just wanted to point out that many schools on the list of most expensive OOS publics also give quite a bit of merit aid which substantially lowers the list price (and to be fair, so too do a few of the least expensive schools on the list).

The following table lists all 50-50 schools where 95% or more of freshman receive an institutional grant with an average of $15,000 or more. IPEDS doesn’t distinguish between grants based on financial need and merit scholarships. However, when virtually every freshman receives some form of an institutional grant, you can assume that a portion of that has to be for merit scholarships.

50-50 Schools by number engineering graduates. Because so many engineering students take five years to graduate, I modified the 50-50 criteria to use the five-year graduation rate for both public and private schools. I’ve listed both for comparison purposes. All of the schools are ABET accredited but you will need to look-up the specific programs.
