Hey everybody! I am a junior in hs and I am looking for a college to go to, as a lot of people here are. Basically, I dont know of a lot of ideas so I thought I might come here. I love to sing and songwrite occasionally. Creative writing also is an option for me in my spare time, which I hear is a good thing for songwriting and singing generally too. That would be great if I could find a college with good programs of writing and vocals. Any ideas? I can answer any questions that would narrow down any ideas too.

Stats? Grades? Financial Picture? Home State?

What part of the country are you looking to be in? What are your stats (GPA, SAT, EC’s)? What kind of feel do you want in a college (large campus, small campus, big city, small town)?

Alright lets see. My grades are average, with Math and Science being my overall worst. They are at D’s. I am done with them both after this year though! Woo hoo! I can certainly afford a Junior College, and I can do a regular college if I raise some more money. I live in California, and would like to settle here, Oregon, Washington, Missouri or maybe Florida. Nowhere too east other than Florida. I like a moderate climate. I am geared more towards a moderate city to a small town, but nothing too small. Not big cities for me or inthemiddleofnowhere haha. Hope that helps!

The best option for you might be to start out at a community college, and then transfer to a CSU. And work harder in CC than you have in HS, so that you can have good transfer grades. :)

I concur with LasMa. CA is the land of opportunity with its CC system and assured transfers.

How would you “raise more money” to afford a “regular college”? An instate Cal State will cost about $21,000 per year. If you try to go to college in one of your mentioned states, you’d be paying high OOS costs…so probably at least $35k per year.

How much will your family pay?

What is your GPA and test scores?

Your best bet is to commute to a local CC (live at home), and then transfer to an affordable school (based on your financial situation). If your family can’t help much and you don’t qualify for Cal Grants (because of grades or income), then you may have to commute to a local CSU or UC.

That figure sounds high to me. S1 attends a CSU, and tuition, fees, dorm with meal plan plus books came to about $16,000. He currently lives in an apartment and pays slightly less overall.

That said, I definitely agree with the advice that OP attend a CC then transfer.

I was using COA, not “basic college costs”. For CSU Fullerton, the COA is even higher…

Tuition and fees $6,626
Room and board $12,097 – –
Books and supplies $1,720
Estimated personal expenses $3,000

Transportation expenses $1,400

COA Estimated Total $24,843

Basic college costs are about: $19,500.

mom2collegekids, yes, I see that we are calculating differently. In addition, S1’s room and board (19 meal plan) is approximately $3500 less at his school.

He would have personal expenses wherever he is so I personally don’t factor that in, and his transportation costs are $400 at maximum.

Some of the price differential, I am sure, is geographical. Interesting that there is so much variation!
