Looking for a Graduate school for Jazz Bass

I have been researching colleges I would like to continue my education at and have came across a number of programs that look promising. These schools include...

University of Oregon
Middle Tenn. State
University of Colorado
University of Indiana
University of Louisville
Depaul University
South Florida University

I am looking for a school that has a good jazz masters program as well as good bass teachers. I don't want to necessarily find the "best" program in the country, just the one that fits me right. I am mainly looking at the music scene in the surrounding areas as well as the actual program requirements. I have spent most of my formal education studying classical music, but spend most of my individual time playing and studying jazz, as well as take jazz bass lessons. I know I am not the strongest player, yet I can still accomplish what I need to. I also have a strong grasp on theory and history. So I am looking for a program that will not be overly competitive, but also not one that is so in need of bassists that it will take anyone (I've already been accepted to one of these programs 2 years ago!). Does anyone have any helpful information on the universities I listed above? Also are there any other programs anyone can think of that I should look into that I didn't mention. I have already looked into UNT and most of the schools in New York. I am trying to stay away from the east coast (which is where I lived my entire life until 2 years ago), but especially New York. Me and that city just do not mix well. Any advice or suggestions anyone has would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

University of Miami?

USC?

University of Denver? If you’re looking at CU, you mine as well look.

What about the University of Cincinnati?

UArts?

Not having researched most of the schools on your list, Indiana University is a competitive, top level program, whereas the others would generally be considered less competitive.

Id say you should take a look a CCNY (city college of new york).
There less competetive (though still not neccesarily a safety) then almost any other music school in new york (which is probably the best city in the US for jazz) and have a very similar faculty to many of the big schools—and have john pattitucci on faculty and I’ve heard he takes on some graduate students for private lessons.
I see you want to stay away from new york (but that your also factoring the music scene into your decision?). I don’t know why an aspiring jazz musician would want to do that. Maybe you should also look into The University of New Orleans. It’s a pretty respected program and has a very strong faculty and is in a great city for jazz–though very different from somewhere like new york or boston.

I would also look at lesser know places like Duquesne in Pittsburgh and UNLV in Las Vegas. Both have excellent Jazz programs and thriving jazz locally. UNLV has an internship program on the strip as well that looked very cool and the school itself is amazing and modern. Even though the college is mainly Nevada and west coast students they try to attract east coast kids. Don’t know the professors for Bass but I’m sure they are both top notch.
