Looking for a great school that excels in certain subjects...

I’m looking for any great schools that have amazing programs in one or most of the following:

Linguistics/ Foreign Languages

Humanities

Classics

History

Politics

Religion

Thanks so much! I’m just not very familiar with the reputations of different schools.

This list screams University of Chicago to me. I don't have Rugg's or Gourman to back me up on this one, but I could send you to each department's homepage...

(Note: lingustics and foreign languages are not at all the same, Chicago is a great school for linguistics and for Ancient Near Eastern languages-- Akkadian and Ugaritic, anybody? )

http://humanities.uchicago.edu/depts/linguistics/
http://humanities.uchicago.edu/depts/classics/index.htm
http://history.uchicago.edu/
http://political-science.uchicago.edu/
http://divinity.uchicago.edu/degree/undergraduate.shtml

Plus, there is an interdisciplinary major called "Interdisciplinary Studies in the Humanities" where students choose courses from across all fields in the humanities and work on a thesis project; there's also a major called Fundamentals which is extremely appealing to those of us who don't want to decide on any one major:

http://collegecatalog.uchicago.edu/programs/fndl.shtml

Above and beyond the individual strength of programs, though, I think about Chicago when I see your list because I think most students (myself included) came into the school with a list of areas that we wanted to study, too, and we have been able to satisfy our curiosity through the Core Curriculum and classes across the board.

Gourman Report ranking for undergraduate linguistics

UCLA
U Chicago
UC Berkeley
U Penn

UC San Diego

U Illinois Urbana Champaign

U Michigan Ann Arbor
Indiana U Bloomington
U Wisconsin Madison
U Washington
NYU
Ohio State

U Hawaii Manoa
U Kansas

U Texas Austin
U Pittsburgh
U Arizona
U Minnesota
UC Irvine
U Florida
U Iowa
U Mass Amherst
UC Santa Barbara

The University of Michigan is strong in all those subjects save Religion.

I second the suggestion of U of Chicago. Unalove's post says it all.

Harvard and Berkeley

All of the Ivies, Stanford, Duke, Northwestern, Chicago

Of course, not all of them are good for every single one of those, but you probably won't go wrong with either one.

With undergrad, looking at specific departments for such a broad array of topics means that strong overall undergrads are your best bet.

hah, I didn't realize Gourman thought that highly of Chicago's linguistics department....

One of the questions I'd be asking myself through this process is how important being able to major in religion is. Religion is one of those wildcard majors; only a handful of universities offer worthwhile programs in it, and the universities that offer it may not be the best fit for you.

I might as well also put in a good word for Chicago's polar opposite, Brown. Brunonians have interests that scatter all across the board, plus Brown has a religious studies program.
