Looking for a LAC that "fits" me

Hi all. I have a few big universities that I am interested in; however, I want to start looking into LACS and I have no idea where to start. A list of 3-6 schools would be much appreciated.

GPA: 4.0
SAT: 2050 (690 R 690 M 670 W 11 E)

Size is not important. I would prefer the school to be on the east coast, but west coast is acceptable--basically anywhere except for the midwest. I want a school with students who "work hard, play hard," but who are also very intellectually curious and who will challenge me in and out of the classroom. I plan to major on economics, so any school which is stronger in economics is also preferred. Lastly, I would like the school to be 3-4 hours away from a major city so I can escape every once in a while.

Thank you!

vassar fits most of what you want, though i’m not sure how strong their econ is, so you’d have to look into that

amherst/wellesley (if you’re a girl) might also work for you

Bard might work (scores are a little low for Amherst). There are also great schools like Claremont McKenna and Pomona in the west (Pomona is also extremely challenging to get into).

Bates and Bowdoin, both in Maine, are about 3 hours from Boston. Both are SAT optional. Bates is in Lewiston, a town of 80,000. Both LACs are about 45 minutes from Portland, ME, a moderately sized city. Both schools have big outdooring programs in which most of the students participate, so if you are into hiking/camping/rafting/kayaking etc…this could be a good fit.

Check out Lafayette College in Easton, PA (about 70 miles due east of NYC along I-78, 1.5 hr. drive off-peak). Your stats fall within the middle 50% of the accepted students. http://www.lafayette.edu/admissions/2013profile.pdf</a>

Lafayette is strong in Economics. It is the most popular major among the 46 that they offer across four divisions - natural sciences, humanities, engineering, and social sciences. Last year, Lafayette defeated defending champion Harvard University and Northwestern and Rutgers universities to earn the national title in the College Fed Challenge at the Federal Reserve Board in Washington, D.C.
Its proximity to NYC (and Philadelphia) offers benefits in terms of Career Placement with the large companies that recruit on campus.
Could someone tell me about Wesleyan? I was looking around and it really caught my eye while looking at their website

Washington & Lee, Davidson for pure LAC. William & Mary, Rice for a LAC-research hybrid although Rice is in Houston, its a fairly insular campus.

Endicott–I have been researching Claremont McKenna and it looks like a great school with wonderful research opportunities and an amazing economics department. Thanks a lot for your suggestion, I never would have found this (seemingly) perfect school

My pleasure–I’ve heard wonderful things about it. I’ve also taken my son to Franklin and Marshall in PA. Lovely school. They divide the school into houses, a la Hogwarts. You can order in snacks to your dorm room at 2:00 a.m. Lots of excellent foreign study opportunities. Solid reputation.

LC82–I hope Lafayette is due west of NYC, otherwise it’s going to need to be renamed Atlantis College!

Might look at Holy Cross-great combination of academics and school spirit. HC has a very strong alumni network in the business community. Holy Cross is 1 hour from Boston.

Have you taken SAT II’s?

No, I am scheduled to take the Math II and Spanish tests on May 1; however, I took the ACT and will receive my scores on April 26 and am hoping for a 32. I think the ACT fits my test taking style a lot more because I am a quick worker and problem solver, so I’m crossing my fingers. I am hoping to use my experience this summer where I will be living in a rural community in Paraguay for 6 weeks with a program modeled after the Peace Corps

As you probably gathered from its website, Wesleyan is 2,800 students, and has a very strong econ department, especially in regards to teaching ability. Econ is one of the most popular majors on campus - it truly is top-notch. Boston and NYC are both 2 hours away, but you’ll go less than you think - there is so much to do on campus.

What specifically do you want to know?

Look at the Patriot League of colleges, top notch academics around 3000 students each and beautiful traditional campuses: Colgate, Bucknell, Holy Cross, Lafayette, etc.

smartalic–I’m more looking for the “feel” of the campus. What type of kids go there, what do students do for entertainment, etc

You also might want to check out the Princeton review site to get a general sense of the “vibe” of various schools.

Sorry, west it is.

Reed might work:

Size is not important. About 1450.

west coast is acceptable Portland, OR

students who “work hard, play hard,” but who are also very intellectually curious and who will challenge me in and out of the classroom. Those are Reedies.

stronger in economics is also preferred. Sorry, don’t know.

3-4 hours away from a major city Maybe too close, 20 min. to downtown by bus.

http://www.reed.edu/apply/news_and_articles/reed_paradoxes.html</a>

vossron–Reed sounds amazing. My only concern is that my test scores aren’t high enough. And when I said 3-4 hours I meant max, the closer the better for me.
