Hey chocchip, the spouse and I like spice, and D1 at that point didn’t, but I don’t remember our mouths being burned off. You can always give it a try and if you don’t like it then the leftovers can go to one of S1’s friends. :)

For those from out of state, Massachusetts is known for fresh seafood. Assuming you do not have time to venture to the North Shore, South Shore, or Cape Cod, here are some local places. It is best to keep the preparation simple to taste the freshness of the seafood:

Medford pure fresh seafood, not much ambiance, great value, good clam chowder

[Moulton’s Seafood Restaurant, Medford, MA | Boston’s Hidden Restaurants](Moulton's Seafood Restaurant [CLOSED], Medford, MA | Boston's Hidden Restaurants)

Somerville (Ball Square very close to Tufts)- seafood & Italian, closed Mondays

[Pescatore, Somerville, MA | Boston’s Hidden Restaurants](Pescatore [CLOSED], Somerville, MA | Boston's Hidden Restaurants)

Davis Square- Seafood/Italian (but no fried clams)

Cambridge (listed above in Harvard Square post)

Dolphin Seafood Best Value - chowder not as good

Legal Seafood A little more upscale, good clam chowder

Jasper Whites Summer Shack Celebrity Chef

Best Chowder debate can get as lively as BBQ :-)

Personally, I think when you go to Boston you should eat what’s good there (like chowder and seafood), but it’s dh and my Tufts kid are always game to try barbecue wherever they go.

I know it’s a chain but I love Legal Seafoods. My first trip to Boston was a 9 day business trip back in the days before serious foodies could easily pull recommendations from chowhound and yelp. I kept blowing my (minimal) per diem on dinners at Legal. I keep kosher so I wasn’t going to go hog wild (tee hee) with chowder and shellfish, and I did do lunch at Durgin Park (meh).

They are no longer selling Steve’s Ice Cream at the Taza Chocolate Factory, so don’t spend any time trying to hunt it down. :-(

Good chocolate walnut cake (sold by the slice) at the Danish Pastry Shop next to the campus in the Medford “hillside area”.

When I visited Tufts we went to Dave’s Fresh pasta, which was awesome! It’s in Davis Square

Does anyone know of a very good sushi place either around campus or close by. If not near campus maybe near Harvard square. For parents weekend.

There are two good sushi places in Davis square. Not sure of the names or how long the wait will be on parents weekend.

We were just at Posto…on the outskirts of Davis Square. Excellent Neopolitan pizza, but kinda pricey.

My S swears by the Boston Burger Co. in Davis Square. Hope to try that next time!

^^We also want to go to Dave’s Fresh Pasta, but that was closed by the time we drove by. Love to go and just buy some items to bring home!

What I’m looking for in that area is a good, gourmet Chinese restaurant…any suggestions?

Our son goes to Tufts but we live in the immediate area and love Changsho in Porter Square…try it…I think the food is quite good

[Changsho Restaurant - Porter Square - Cambridge, MA](http://www.yelp.com/biz/changsho-restaurant-cambridge)

^^Thanks, momof2sons…looks great! I will try it next time we’re there…but I can’t do spicy and it seems as if there are many spicy items on menu? Usually places like that are pretty accomodating, though…

Does anyone else have a good recommendation for Chinese/Japanese/Vietmanese food around Tufts? Not spicy?! Thanks! :)

Not exactly a specific recommendation but here is a list of nearby places from the Tufts Student Life portal:

https://www.tuftslife.com/restaurants

Mary Chung has good Chinese food–you can get spicy or not. The restaurant is near Central Square, but that’s just a few miles from Tufts. Restaurant is on Mass Ave. not far from the Red Line T stop.

[??? , Mary Chung Restaurant - ??? - About Us](http://www.marychung.com/en/)

If you go to Mary Chung, the best item on the menu by far is the Sweet and Sour Wanton Soup.

Great Japanese food in the Porter Exchange - very close to campus. I find Chinese food in Boston, broadly, to be disappointing, but Zoe’s (also near Porter) is probably the best spot in Somerville/Cambridge.

Dan - even Chinatown?!

Outside of the Gourmet Dumpling House (and a couple Vietnamese places) - I’ve not found anything I’m super-excited about there.

Thanks so much for your responses Beantowngirl, Bromfield and Dan.

We’ll give your suggestions a try! We’ve gone to these tiny, tiny hole-in-the-wall places in NYC that have been soooo flavorful & delicious…we just assumed Boston, being a big city, would have more options!

Looks like your suggestion & momof2sons suggestion are both in Porter Square/Porter Exchange…where is that in relation to the campus? Thanks!

It’s like a 25 minute walk from the campus center, or a 10 minute walk from Davis (where the Tufts shuttle drops you off), or a 10 minute drive (assuming traffic isn’t too bad). Between Tufts and Harvard Sq.

We picked up our S from Tufts last Saturday and ended up at Dave’s Fresh Pasta Co. for lunch. Awesome sandwiches and wraps but cramped seating. We even brought our cooler with us to take a bunch of gourmet groceries home with us! We’ve enjoyed some yummy salad combos all week long! Their citrus beets were outstanding!
