I am a first year student currently pursuing a B.arch at Cornell.

I am wondering what are some good ways of finding summer internships for a first year architecture student. I'm trying to be ethical and not work for free (I need to pay for college) but it seems like the likelihood of landing some sort of internship is slim for a first year student. I do know how to operate autocad and have worked in a firm before.

I am looking at firms in Arizona, New York City and possibly China/Taiwan over the summer.

are connections most effective? recruiters are coming to my school this spring..is this the best way? any advice? tips?

and is it ok to copy drawings of buildings that I like on autocad and include it in my portfolio? (to demonstrate autocad skills)

At Cornell, you are in the epicenter of architecture connections in New York City. Have you impressed any of your design teachers? Do you think they might be able to recommend you to a firm or two? Make SURE that you ask them. This is one of the main reasons you go to a school like Cornell.

You can also go to the Asssitant Dean or the career office and tell them that you want to work in New York City.

You should also ask your teachers and the Dean's office what to include on your resume and in your portfolio. Remember--everyone LOVES to give advice. Everyone loves to be a mentor.

Start establishing those mentor relationships right now!

thanks for the really good advice! I think I did pretty well (A- for design studio) so hopefully my professors wouldn't mind recommending me to several firms. I will go ask them when I return to school. thanks so much!
