Looking For Advice About a Transfer Situation

Hey everyone. I'm a long time reader of CC, but this is my first time actually posting. My current situation is that I've been accepted as a junior transfer to the University of Pennsylvania (CAS- chemistry major) and wait-listed at Brown. I'm also still waiting to hear back from Johns Hopkins. Considering Brown is my top choice by far, I was pretty disappointed, but I plan on remaining on the wait list. Penn has a reply date of June 3rd, and Brown says they'll have their final decisions by mid-June. If I hold out for Brown, it would mean turning down Penn and possibly not having a school to transfer to, which would be the worst-case scenario. Does anyone know if a school's reply date is absolutely set-in-stone? I'm really not sure what to do at this point and would really appreciate any advice.

These are the two options I would pursue.

Option #1: Ask Penn for an extension. Let them know you’ve been placed on Brown’s waiting list and you would like to wait until mid-June to make a decision.

Option #2: Remain on Brown’s waiting list but pay the enrollment deposit for Penn. That way if you get don’t get off Brown’s waiting list then you still have Penn. On the other hand if you do get off Brown’s waiting list, then all you would lose if your enrollment deposit.

It would be crazy to hold out for Brown, chances of coming off these waitlists are slim. You need to pay the deposit to Penn and let it just be a miracle if Brown happens.

I guess I’ll try asking for the extension, but if that doesn’t work, it seems like paying the deposit to Penn is the most reasonable option at this point. Redroses- I guess I should have known that the chances of getting off a waitlist was small. Thanks for the advice!

The miracle DOES actually happen to some applicants :)

Sure, and I hope it happens here, but he’s into a wonderful school and I’d hate to see him lose that taking a chance on getting off an ivy WL…

I haven’t lost all hope for Brown, but I recognize that the chances of me getting in are small. I definitely plan on making sure that I don’t lose the opportunity to go to Penn.

Have you asked B for an early decision yet?

I was actually planning on calling them tomorrow. I’m also going to call Hopkins since apparently decisions aren’t getting mailed out until late this month or early in June. Hopefully I’ll be able to get a definite answer so I can figure all of this out.

I would just pay the deposit for UPenn as insurance. Sure, you might lose a few hundred bucks, but it’s better to have that peace of mind.
