Hi All, we’re looking for the best school options that offer either a BA or a minor in musical theatre. We’re also looking for programs that aren’t easy to get into but you have a reasonable chance. And lastly, if its not too much to ask…that they have solid programs in English and Business.
Thanks in advance for any and all input!
Ball e. Get a BA in Theatrical Studies and solid liberal arts for English
Sorry, Ball State
American University has a BA in MT, is not very easy to get in to either academically or audition, and has very good English and Business programs.
Muhlenberg has a good MT program and is a well-respected LAC that’s not easy to get into but not impossible either. Temple has a very flexible set of BA options and you could probably double-major. LMU has a well-regarded BA and is also good academically. Maybe throw Catholic U in as well, I have heard less about their MT program here. IU has great programs for MT and Business.
Wright State has a Theater Studies BA - participants can audition for shows - and they recently added an optional Arts Management Certificate that requires an additional 18 credits and an internship. The Business school is one of the best. Don’t know much about English.
Southern Cal
You can find a comprehensive list of BA MT programs, both audition-based and non-audition, here:

Some of the BA MT programs that frequently get recommended here on this forum or elsewhere include:
James Madison*
Wagner*
American*
UCLA*
Marymount Manhattan*
Northern Colorado* - more like a BFA MT program
Pepperdine* - not an MT program per se, but a combined Theatre and Music program
Plymouth State*
Desales* - MT track
U New Hampshire*
SUNY Cortland*
Brandeis - MT track
Christopher Newport
Muhlenberg - does not have an MT program per se, but does musicals and theatre students can minor in dance and voice
- audition required for admission
All audition-based programs are competitive for admission, but James Madison, American, Wagner, UCLA, Marymount, and Northern Colorado are likely to be more-competitive to very-competitive for artistic admission.
