Does anyone know if it’d be reasonable to do an apartment search in November/December/over winter break and move in sometime during January? I think this would be easier for me for several reasons, but I don’t know what would be available then or if NYU would let me leave housing midyear. Thanks.

NYU spells out pretty clearly that by accepting a room for fall, you are also accepting the same room for spring. The only way out of housing halfway through the year is to either withdraw/leave of absence from NYU, have a documented personal reason for being unable to stay within housing, or go abroad.

Oh wow, that is quite clear. I have no idea why I was under the impression that you could leave halfway through. Thank you.

Yeah, I was actually quite shocked that NYU lays it out this clearly, LOL. They are usually very confusing when it comes to rules and regulations, but they cleaned up the Housing website over the spring.

I guess my question now is how would finding an apartment during March/April be? I was planning on staying over the summer anyway so I could hopefully hold the same job year round and also look for internship opportunities. If I started looking during March/April, would I be okay to move in during May?

Most people look during that time period so you should be able to find a place. It doesn’t take very long to begin your lease, just make sure you get all your paperwork ready beforehand. Depending on what you are looking for and the owner’s expectations you may need a lot.
