I am looking to see if anyone has or knows where I may get an excel spreadsheet for lists of colleges?

Looking for data like application dates, expected tests scores, size, good for merit aid, rankings, web sites, if they use the sat 2 subject tests, best majors, most competence majors to apply and other items like this.

Hopefully all of this information can help start the process for my sons as they begin thinking of colleges to apply. Also keep them on track as we use the dates information.

From your high school counselor?

If you are like most of us out here, you will “roll your own”. There are thousands of colleges, no one has a spreadsheet that includes all the data. You will probably spend a lot of hours researching what is important to you about colleges and tracking it. If you want a template (what columns do people put in their spreadsheets as they start tracking), we have had threads on that. Here is one:

<a href=“Admissions tracking spreadsheet? - Parents Forum - College Confidential Forums”>http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/parents-forum/1419390-admissions-tracking-spreadsheet.html

Sources of data we used a lot:
- Websites for individual colleges
- Fiske Guide to Colleges (great help in getting an overview of colleges and identifying colleges to look into further)
- College Confidential
- I usually pull most recent SAT ranges by Googling “<college name=”“> SAT Range” and looking at the about.com listings. I find them to be an easy format to quickly look at.
- The Common Data Set at each college, available for most on their websites. Easiest to find by Googling “<college name=”“> Common Data Set”.</college></college>

The website has a pdf file: https://www.commonapp.org/Login#!PublicPages/ApplicationRequirements
You can probably convert to an excel file

For another table, <a href=“Student Stories Resources | College Data”>http://www.collegedata.com/cs/content/common_app_colleges.jhtml. I just copied and pasted each page into an excel spreadsheet - tedious but easy

In the end do you really need all 500+ colleges? (I sure didn’t). I would copy the headings and the copy and paste the individual colleges into excel.

If you pull info on the application process, you will need to validate against the college website when the actual application period begins. Colleges change their dates, their options for applying (EA/ED, etc), required materials, treatment of test scores, supplemental essay questions, etc. sometimes. So you need to validate whatever you find out in previous years when you get closer to the application date.
