My son is applying to colleges and wants a major in music, voice and also get educators training. We would like a program with strong chorale groups. We live in Maryland and would like him to be 6-8 hours away by driving or a direct flight. It would also be good if there were a Jewish presence on campus. Anyone have ideas for us? Thank you.

Check on the music major forum too but maybe Westminter Choir College (in New Jersey I think).

What can your family afford? There are some fantastic programs in the upper midwest (St Olaf, Concordia). Here is Dayton Wright State has an excellent program (I believe the music program requires an audition). UDayton has some good choruses but their voice program isn’t as good as Wright State’s (IMO).

Music majors are different from Music Education majors. There are Music Performance majors (i.e. strings, brass, windwoods, percussion, chorale etc.) and there are Music History majors. Some even have Music conducting or Music Composition majors. Music Education is essentially a teaching degree and most often for secondary or elementary teachers.

Appalachian State University is strong in all areas.

UDel, in Newark Delaware…

DITTO on checking out the music majors forum. Just wondering…is she interested in a Jewish Sacred Music curriculum? If so you might want to look at Jacobs at IU.

Not sure about the travel time or direct flights.

This would involve a plane flight, but the Thornton School of Music has a strong choral program. The school is within the university and offers much interaction with the School of Cinematic Arts and the top notch School of Theatre.

Faculty in choral music is well known and includes Professor Nick Strimple. The newest addition to the choral music faculty is Lady Susan Digby from Cambridge. At Cambridge she was the acting Director of Music at Queen’s College. Lady Digby is a Churchill Fellow, holds the OBE and is a Fellow of the Royal Society.

USC is need blind in admissions and has one of the largest financial aid programs in the nation.

Hebrew Union College is adjacent to USC. Various Jewish organizations are active on campus. They will gather for Shabbat.

James Madison University in VA would be worth looking into.

I did not research it myself, but my D’s good friend went to the Frost School of Music at the U of Miami. And I’m guessing there is a sizable Jewish population there!
